[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Light Blue Japanese-Style Studio Photography Under the Moon: Behind-the-Scenes Insights

This photo set uses a blue-and-white color palette as its main tone, combining a moon backdrop with Japanese props to visually present the character's light and nimble side. To avoid redundant elements during the shoot, extensive pre-planning was done for prop placement and movement paths.

For costume design in this Touhou Project Japanese-style studio photography session, a high waistline structure paired with oversized flared sleeves was adopted. The giant head bow serves as a visual focus; to ensure it wouldn't collapse during shooting, stiff tulle was used for internal support while maintaining an overall lightweight feel. The gohei wand prop in hand features color-gradient tones echoing the sleeve tassels, creating a sense of visual motion during hand movements. Multiple layers of mesh tulle were stacked in the skirt hem to achieve a fluffy flare when spinning; though physically demanding, the dynamic outcome was highly satisfying.

As for set construction, a giant glowing moon was chosen as the main background, edged with pink floral branches and red maple leaves. Oil-paper umbrellas at the top were arranged haphazardly based on color blocks to form a rich background texture. This cool-toned backdrop paired with the highlighted moon separates character contours cleanly, preventing the blue costume from blending into the background. Meanwhile, wooden floor lamps placed around the perimeter added warm accent lighting in shadow areas, balancing overall color temperature.

Since garment mobility was somewhat limited—especially given the wide sleeves and headpiece, where overly dramatic movements could obscure the face—I experimented with single-leg standing balance poses. I wore white over-the-knee socks barefoot to emphasize a weightless, floating aesthetic. A seated pose looking back sideways was intended to express the cold, clear-headed side of the character's personality, minimizing forced sweet smiles.

During shooting, I preferred searching for natural beauty in motion rather than stiff posing. For example, pressing the shutter at the exact moment I spun my body and let inertia send the sleeves flying recorded the flowing movement of fabric. Post-processing focused on preserving the cool atmosphere of the blue moon while maintaining a sense of isolation between skin tone and the environment, avoiding complex filters to protect the outfit's authentic fabric textures. As for going shoeless, since the studio floor was a wooden platform gentle on the feet, it complemented the cold, barefoot aesthetic perfectly.

This Touhou Project studio session was an attempt at unconventional color coordination, stripping away the iconic red and white palette in favor of blue and white with mustard yellow accents. The goal was to preserve the character's core charm while delivering fresh visual appeal. In pose guidance, the photographer had me spin repeatedly to test skirt spread, capturing the sleeves stretching through the air, prioritizing dynamic capture over static posing. Blue oil-paper umbrellas served as interactive props, their curved edges blending deftly into eye-level framing to enhance spatial depth of field. Maintaining balance with the large headpiece while matching the photographer's snapshot rhythm required constant adjustments.

For fantasy-themed anime-style photography like this, setting up studio lighting and shadow atmospheres is paramount—it can't be too dark to lose detail, nor overexposed to ruin the mood. High-key highlights and shadow layers must be retained within cool tones. The final images achieved the serene, dreamlike effect we envisioned. Integrating personal interpretations into casual cosplay creation and bringing them to life is immensely enjoyable and rewarding.
