For this Rem cosplay styling, I chose a black leather bodysuit paired with an oversized red-and-black spliced hat. The reflective sheen of the leather stood out strikingly under the cool blue lighting of the night photography scene, which, paired with the blue wig and blue colored contacts, created a completely different vibe from Rem's usual maid outfit.
This costume has numerous accessories. To keep the hat structured and crisp, internal supports were added, so wearing it for an extended period put some pressure on my head. Leather garments can be rather stuffy, yet during outdoor shoots with a breeze, it actually shielded against the cold wind quite well. The bat-winged gloves featured pointed corners that somewhat restricted hand mobility, requiring extra care when handling items. The thigh garters pinched slightly after walking for a long time, but they undeniably sculpted the leg lines beautifully. The boots were made of patent leather and easily collected dust, requiring frequent wipe-downs with wet wipes to prevent unwanted glare spots. Since this outdoor shoot was primarily at night, we utilized the venue's natural ambient blue glow and diffuse warm light sources. In post-processing, we focused heavily on adjusting skin tones and the reflective texture of the leather to prevent blown-out highlights.
The shooting focus was highlighting the contrast between the character and this Little devil costume. The poses that day were practiced repeatedly. In the second photo chosen as the cover, making a 'shh' silencing gesture paired with a pointed gaze was intended to convey the playful, mysterious charm of a little devil. Because there were many passersby in the background, we constantly adjusted camera angles and relied on a wide aperture to blur them out in the viewfinder and keep the focus on the subject.
Touching upon my understanding of Rem from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World: although this isn't her standard default outfit, it is a well-recognized design from official spin-offs and merchandise. The makeup emphasized the eyes with vibrant blue colored contacts while keeping a hint of red lips. The ruffles on the skirt and the bat wings on the back spread out naturally the moment I turned or sat down.
My condition was fairly steady on the day of the shoot. Holding a cool, composed demeanor for hours was slightly demanding, so I touched up my powder and lipstick during breaks. Gear-wise, a telephoto lens was used to compress the background and isolate the subject effectively.
Overall, the costume, wig, and prop preparation for this Little devil costume was quite extensive, and putting it on and taking it off was a bit tedious, but the final photos captured the intended vision. Walking through the crowds in this gear, many fellow fans recognized the character immediately, proving the fidelity was on point. Every meticulously prepared cosplay brings rewarding memories and photography insights, making this Rem cosplay shoot a truly fulfilling experience.
