The convention photos from the Firefly ACG Expo are finally sorted out. Bringing this red, white, and black outfit to the venue certainly took a substantial amount of preparation. Doing cosplay at conventions in the summer puts the durability of the base makeup to the ultimate test. Fortunately, despite the muggy heat later in the day, the natural outdoor lighting added tremendous charm to the costume. This photo set was shot along the grey tiled walkway outside the exhibition hall, deliberately avoiding the cluttered indoor neon lights and making use of the softer evening skylight to make up for the flatness of indoor venue lighting.
In terms of costume details, the black corset structure on the upper body combined with red pendants refracts a wonderful sheen under natural light, adding dimensional layers to the outfit. What took the most effort was actually the pair of giant plush ear accessories; although quite bulky and prone to bumping into people in the crowded expo halls, wearing them instantly elevated the recognizability of the whole look. The high-slit skirt design of the lower body is the standout highlight of this outfit. The airy, semi-sheer white tulle robe contrasts sharply with the deep red-and-black main body, allowing the white tulle to drape naturally and create dynamic movement when adjusting seating postures.
On the day of the shoot, I was constantly shuttling around the venue rolling my suitcase. When I got tired, I found a clean spot along the road for a quick rest, where the suitcase served as an extremely practical seat. The three selected photos were all taken while sitting on the suitcase. When shooting convention photos outdoors, finding a clean and properly elevated spot is often tricky, making a suitcase a very handy makeshift prop. During shooting, I experimented with different sightlines and postures: a composed front-facing shot with arms crossed, a casual look resting a hand gently against the chin, and an expansive side profile with crossed legs. In composition, I intentionally leveraged the drape of the skirt and the extended leg lines from the seated posture to elongate my overall body proportions.
For makeup details, I intentionally intensified red accents around the eyes and cheekbones, which not only highlighted the brilliance of the eyes under high-definition lenses but also formed a color harmony with the red elements of the costume. For a summer convention, setting makeup is an essential step that cannot be overlooked, as sweating outdoors can easily cause patchiness. Meanwhile, block-heeled sandals with transparent straps appeared minimalist, yet they complemented the lightness of the overall outfit on camera while granting greater flexibility when adjusting foot poses.
I met many fellow enthusiasts during the convention, and during our chats, we discussed fabric choices for wide sleeves and intricate plush accessories. For outfits with distinctive fantasy designs, material selection directly dictates the textural presentation of the final look. This time, I used subtly lustrous fabrics for the red outer cloak combined with white matte semi-sheer tulle, using this contrast in luster to ensure rich visual depth under varying lighting angles.
I'd also like to share my thoughts on cosplaying characters in this style. Blending the character's temperament with one's own features is never an easy task. Some outfits are quite heavy to wear, but once you find your unique way of expression, the moment the shutter clicks makes it all worthwhile. The process of getting these shots was indeed tiring, yet it served as valuable practice for managing costume details and posture control in casual cosplay.
After every shoot, the wig must be neatly combed and returned to its storage box, and the large plush ear accessories carefully packed to prevent deformation. This costume brought not only immense enthusiasm and on-site interactions at the expo, but also valuable styling experience. I hope to take this look forward to exploring photoshoots in diverse settings in the future.
