This trip to the Zhanjiang Comic Con can be said to be exceptionally fulfilling. This Rem maid outfit actually features an abundance of intricate details; to recreate that light, airy girlhood feel, the skirt's layers were chosen with a somewhat stiffer material to support the overall shape. At the junction where the white ruffles meet the black skirt body, every single layer needed meticulous arrangement to ensure that multi-tiered tiered-skirt effect presented perfectly in front of the camera. The headpiece and pink bow portions also underwent numerous micro-adjustments to ensure they stayed securely fixed to the wig throughout the event—after all, if the wig cap isn't worn properly, the overall head shape ends up looking lacking in fullness.
The shooting location was chosen as an indoor venue featuring a pool. The lighting here is exceptionally translucent, and the steel-structure dome forms a natural geometric framework in the background. To match this scene, we designed a jumping posture with one foot stepping on a stone. This action actually tests core strength quite a bit, because standing on rocks in high heels while holding up a heavy skirt hem to maintain balance means the slightest sway creates ripples in the water. The White stockings have a wonderful texture under this kind of lighting; however, when shooting ground-reflective mirror images like this, you must pay strict attention to the light's refraction angle, otherwise overexposure easily occurs. The disturbance from surface ripples is actually quite large; to prevent the reflection from distorting, I had to stay as steady and motionless as possible.
The waist cut of this costume is relatively form-fitting, so prior to the shoot, I avoided eating too much as much as possible; deep-breathing waist-cinching is a fundamental skill. The lace choker at the collar is a bit tight, but I pushed through it just to showcase the neck line. We tried several angles by the waterside; shooting from a low angle effectively elongated the leg lines while lending the background dome structure an even more oppressive and grandiose feel. During post-processing, we primarily boosted the clarity and transparency of the water surface, making the underwater water plants and stones clearer, and the reflection more pronounced. Because the venue's overhead lighting was rather strong, facial shadows easily formed on the subject, so tilting the chin slightly upward during shooting was an absolute must to keep the catchlights looking natural.
There were quite a few photographer friends on-site, and everyone exchanged camera angles and positioning. Walking back and forth by the pool wearing this outfit, though slightly inconvenient due to the long skirt hem, yielded an extremely high rate of stunning shots. That turning-and-lifting-the-skirt action was actually captured during a rapid spin; to catch that single frame where the skirt hem was fully unfurled, dozens of discarded shots were taken. Though the black Mary Jane shoes didn't have exceptionally high heels, standing on the rocks for long periods was still quite tiring. The White stockings are actually quite easy to get dirty, rubbing against the edges of the rocks, so I'll have to hand-wash them thoroughly with cold water when I get back. Although convention photo returns don't allow for infinite retakes like studio shoots, they still record that unique atmosphere of the convention site, and discussing poses and lighting with everyone was an immensely fun process.
To give the photos a stronger sense of storytelling, I also purposely practiced my hand gestures. The posture of lifting the skirt shouldn't be too rigid; the fingers should be slightly relaxed in a natural curve so it doesn't look overly deliberate. I used a hair straightener to slightly curl the ends of the wig inward so that when turning around, the hair strands would produce a natural swaying effect following the movement. The moss and stone textures at the bottom of the water were brightened slightly in post-processing, enhancing the dimensional layering of the frame. Although full-body shots of such grand scenes make it difficult to completely account for every single detail, the overall texture has already met my expectations. I brought two outfits this time, and this maid costume turned out to have the most unexpected and striking effect by the pool.
