[Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay] A Cold Illusionary Dream Under Hakugyokurou's Night Cherry Blossoms

Today I'm here to share this set of Saigyouji Yuyuko photos taken under the night cherry blossoms. Actually, shooting night scenes has always been something I look forward to but also feel a bit daunted by, as it requires excellent lighting control and on-site coordination. This time, the location was chosen in a cherry blossom forest at night. The environment itself carries a deep and cold temperament, which perfectly matches the setting of Hakugyokurou from Touhou Project.

This costume was actually in preparation for a long time, with most of the energy spent on those complex lace trims and color gradients. The white and blue Lolita color scheme, paired with short pink hair, presents a highly transparent sense of air under the cool night lighting. To restore the props from the setting, we specially paired it with an embroidered folding fan and a hollowed-out transparent lace umbrella. During the shoot, we not only had to consider how to hold these props naturally but also had to account for the moments when the skirt hem fluttered as the wind blew.

During the shooting process, photographer @悲伤绿色小猫LIN was constantly looking for the best camera angles. Especially with those few low-angle shots, it was truly not easy to balance the flowers, umbrella, and character within the same frame. To find the best dynamic effect, I repeatedly swished my skirt hem and adjusted the angle of the folding fan. The action of blowing the flower stem in the second picture was a spontaneous idea; there happened to be a gentle breeze at that moment, so I held the little twig I was playing with between my lips. The captured expression turned out to be much more relaxed and natural than what was pre-designed.

In terms of post-processing color grading, we deliberately avoided warm tones, choosing a cool color palette leaning toward cyan and blue, and slightly increased the exposure to create a high-key, dreamy, mist-like dispersing effect. This processing method removed the original overly vibrant colors of the night cherry blossoms, retaining a cold texture instead. The lace, white socks, and folds of the skirt hem on my body looked exceptionally translucent under backlight or strong fill light, which is exactly the visual core this set of photos aimed to achieve.

As for the hardships of the night cherry blossom outdoor shoot, it's something only those who are in it can understand. The outdoor temperature at midnight is not high; exposing my shoulders and legs while maintaining an elegant expression can be said to be a test of willpower. But when the final product came out, seeing those lightweight veils lifted by the wind and the aura emanating from the paper umbrella made me feel that everything was worth it. The makeup artist also did subtractions on facial shadows and highlights, trying to make the face have the translucency of porcelain skin, which, combined with the pink wig, perfectly matched Yuyuko's subtle temperament.

In addition, during the shoot, we had to be careful to avoid messy light sources on site, relying solely on strobes and ambient light for shaping, which heavily tests the photographer's skills. In between shooting intervals, we would also discuss how to express the texture of the folding fan and how to fold the skirt hem to show the fullness of the Lolita dress. The final tone of this set of works was also settled after matching a few times; it took a lot of thought to both preserve the plant details of the cherry blossom forest and make the premium feel of the clothing stand out.

We tried our best to avoid stiffness when handling movements. For example, the extended hand in the second picture was not intentionally touching the petals, but rather letting the body be in a state of facing the wind. To coordinate with these moments, I practiced the opening and closing of the folding fan and the spinning of the umbrella many times in advance. During the shoot, I was constantly adjusting my center of gravity because the skirt hem was very heavy, and a slight lapse in attention would cause me to lose balance; the photographer needed to accurately capture shots in motion. I also hope this set of photos can convey that hazy aesthetic beauty of Hakugyokurou hovering between reality and illusion under cosplay photography.
