This photo was actually taken quite a while ago. Because my crimson hair almost completely blended into the red ambient light of the background, I spent extensive time refining the Photography post-processing before feeling confident enough to post it. The theme for this shoot is Kaenbyou Rin from Touhou Project—widely known as Orin and her cart. To align with character lore and channel my favorite Dark Gothic aesthetic, I chose a red-dominated chiaroscuro scene. In practice, pairing red hair with a red background is a notorious pitfall, as the subject easily loses three-dimensional depth. During Photography post-processing, I subdued the purity and saturation of the red background lighting while brightening the skin tones, using warm-and-cool contrast to separate the figure cleanly from the backdrop to achieve the final look you see here.
The props were equally intriguing: human skulls, white skeletal frames, withered branches, and a birdcage, perfectly fitting the eerie aura of driving the cart. The outfit consisted of a Dark Gothic dress trimmed with delicate lace and a dark green flared skirt, complemented by over-the-knee Black stockings and slender stiletto heels. To convey the character's signature mystique before the lens, I deliberately chose seated postures that accentuated sleek leg lines; crossing one leg over the other also framed the tailored lace bodice sharply.
The photoshoot took more than half a day. Continuously adjusting hand placements holding the skull and fine-tuning leg angles under intense red lighting was physically exhausting. Wearing high heels for hours made my feet sore, which is why the seated pose might look effortless and relaxed—I was honestly resting on any stable support I could find! However, seeing the final selected frames made every ounce of effort worthwhile. While preserving the character's essence, the photographer introduced clever visual guides—such as the white skeleton bird held in hand or resting across my lap—effectively directing the viewer's eye and breaking up static composition.
The high-contrast red-and-black palette has always been popular in anime conventions and photography communities. This attempt served as valuable experience in mastering color balance under complex lighting. I love sharing analytical breakdowns of shoot details, and this time focused on Photography post-processing insights for making subjects pop against crimson backgrounds. Huge thanks to the photographer for treating every nuance with such meticulous dedication in this Touhou Project Kaenbyou Rin cosplay project.
