For this convention, two friends and I coordinated a pink-themed ensemble. When shooting a trio group set, the trickiest part is always aligning schedules—everyone has busy daily lives, so finally convening at the convention was a feat in itself. Because our styling carried a strong idol stage presence laced with fantasy motifs, prepping and organizing our accessories alone took nearly two hours prior to heading out. The halo above my head was hand-fastened with thin wire and LED light strips, demanding extreme caution when walking to keep passing backpacks in the dense crowds from knocking it off. Though lightweight, the wing prop on my back was quite bulky, requiring me to turn sideways just to pass through the turnstile gates. Slipping into platform shoes gave a great height boost, but trekking across an anime convention is an intense test of physical stamina. To complement the overall visual identity, the three of us selected distinct legwear: one wore black-and-pink striped over-the-knee socks, another wore White stockings adorned with bows, while I opted for pink-and-white high-top sneakers showing off a hint of ankle socks. These subtle variations gave our trio distinct individuality within a unified aesthetic.
Inside the hall, we scouted a relatively open spot beside a lounge area to begin shooting Convention photos. Overhead lighting at conventions is notoriously harsh and cluttered, easily casting unflattering, deep shadows over the face. To dodge this dreaded downlight, we tested multiple angles before settling on a position with subtle side-lighting that carved out dimensional rim profiles. The heart of a group shoot lies in dynamic interaction; if all three of us simply stood stiffly flashing peace signs, the result would feel lifeless. After a quick brainstorm, we designed poses around our individual character aesthetics: our friend on the left wore a dark techwear look, taking larger, expressive stances with open arms to create visual tension; the center look evoked an idol stage costume, holding a magic wand in a showcase gesture; my skirt was voluminous, so I lifted one leg to add kinetic energy. The photographer snapped candid bursts while we focused on chatting naturally, turning, looking in different directions, and sharing occasional smiles.
The hardest variable to manage when shooting convention photos is the surrounding foot traffic. Strangers constantly walked through the background; just as we dialed in our expressions, an attendee lugging shopping bags would stroll into the frame. To preserve a clean composition, we had to reset repeatedly or rely on shallow depth of field to blur distractions away. Halfway through, perspiration made our wigs slightly frizzy, so we took turns heading to the restroom to restyle with combs and hairspray and touch up our makeup. Although it was quite an ordeal, helping each other adjust costumes and realign props cultivated a wonderful team spirit as we worked toward a great shoot. Our synchronized pink, white, and black palette popped dramatically against the dark, industrial steel architecture of the exhibition hall. Standing side-by-side, the visual layering of halos and wings saturated the frame with lively depth.
The entire shoot lasted over an hour across various spots and formations. While convention lighting and backdrops can never match the pristine control of a studio, the organic bustling energy unique to convention snapshots simply cannot be replicated on a closed set. After wrapping up, we dragged our aching feet around the hall to browse merch and laughed together about the shared struggle of carrying heavy props all day. Returning to the hotel and removing our makeup, reviewing the raw captures imported from the camera made every drop of sweat and sore footstep worthwhile. Opportunities for three friends to pull off a fully coordinated Girl group style cosplay look are rare, and coming together to preserve these memories was pure joy in itself.
