This pool shoot themed around After the Rain happened to coincide with an unexpected sudden shower. Many assume rainy weather makes capturing good photos difficult, yet raindrops disturbing the azure pool surface into ripples and air bubbles created an organic atmosphere that bright sunny days simply cannot replicate. The conceptual focus was shedding complex props and artificial studio sets—retaining only the sailor uniform, a clear swim ring, and the pool itself—to convey the damp, misty emotional weight of a summer rain with documentary-like realism.
The wardrobe featured a classic white sailor top with a dark navy collar, paired with a dark pleated skirt and white pantyhose. Once submerged, the wet fabric clung to the skin, revealing silhouettes beneath previously loose cloth, while the texture of the stockings turned semi-sheer under refracted water ripples to emphasize Stockings and beautiful legs. To accentuate these textures, I avoided having the model submerge too deeply, guiding her instead to stay half-immersed or sit atop the transparent ring. This preserved graceful body contours and leg lines while keeping movements natural. To align with the theme's restrained, adolescent melancholy, I directed her emotional tone to remain quiet and contemplative—avoiding radiant smiles in favor of a cool, hazy gaze that, paired with wet hair strands, carried powerful narrative depth.
On the gear side, I paired a full-frame mirrorless camera with a 35mm prime lens. This focal length effectively established the pool's environmental context while closing the distance to the model to catch subtle water droplets and emotive nuances. I relied heavily on backlighting and rim-lighting, cranking the shutter speed past 1/1000s to freeze splashing droplets and falling rain mid-air. Because ambient light was dim outdoors in the rain, off-camera strobes were used to overpower the ambient background, carving the model out from the blue-grey water while sparking glistening specular catchlights across the ripples. Angle-wise, I alternated between eye-level framing, high-angle top-down perspectives, and low-angles skimming the water surface. Eye-level angles focused on emotional portrayal, high angles used the clear swim ring and pool floor tiles to create leading visual lines, and water-level angles leveraged blurred foreground raindrops into dreamy bokeh.
In post-processing, I established a high-key Japanese photographic aesthetic, lifting overall exposure generously to ensure a crisp, luminous look. The palette was unified into a cool cyan-blue cast, cooling down color temperatures so the pool felt refreshingly chilled. Skin retouching retained natural beads of water and hydrated dewiness without excessive airbrushing to highlight authentic beauty. I carefully deepened shadow areas on the pool floor while boosting surface reflections to amplify the pool's crystal-clear transparency.
Many have asked whether shooting in such weather was exhausting. Submerged shooting indeed takes a heavy physical toll, as drenched garments grow heavy and wet pantyhose restricts movement. Yet seeing the final collection—crystallized droplets, subtle ripples across the surface, and that signature youthful blend of innocence and melancholy—made every moment of this Swimming pool photography worthwhile. More than a cosplay or uniform portrait, it stands as an emotional record of summer and rain.
