[Hirasawa Yui Cosplay] K-ON!'s Street Daily Life: The Afternoon Moments of Guitar and Japanese-style JK

Putting on this dark blue Japanese-style JK uniform and standing on the slightly sloping stairs of Chongqing, as the shutter clicks, the original intention of this shoot emerges—to recreate that relaxed and casual daily atmosphere of the Light Music Club. As Hirasawa Yui, besides the signature orange short hair and yellow hairpins, the details of the attire also determine the quality of a cosplay photoshoot. The shirt's ribbon was tied in a casual knot rather than a neat way, which fits better with the character's carefree and unconstrained personality. As for that blue-and-white pendant and the light orange knit scarf, they were accessories paired to deal with Chongqing's changeable weather this season, keeping warm while adding a sense of color layering to the frame.

The location for this outdoor shoot was chosen in a highly lively street block in Chongqing. I especially like taking photos in daily scenes such as street corners, stairs, and railings because these places allow the subject's state to relax completely. Like carrying that huge black guitar bag up and down the stairs—although that guitar bag was actually a lightweight prop, carrying it on my shoulders still brought a full sense of youth. In terms of action design, I deliberately avoided the stiffness of forcing a pose, adopting playful postures instead, such as turning back while biting a piece of toast, leaning forward while grabbing the railing with one hand, or even lifting up one leg. The photographer's snapshot timing was incredibly precise, perfectly capturing that touch of clumsiness and liveliness.

During the shoot, we fully utilized the unique light and shadows of Chongqing. Due to the blockage from buildings and trees on both sides of the street, the light peeking through the gaps and hitting my body felt very soft, making the skin tone look natural and clear. Among them, a snapshot standing on the sidewalk and kicking up one leg is one of my favorite actions in this set. Using a wide aperture, the tree trunks and the extending street behind were rendered with a shallow depth of field, keeping the out-of-focus areas soft and instantly highlighting the central figure. Paired with classic black tights and uniform leather shoes, this pure Japanese-style JK vibe flowed out very naturally, instead of just staying at the level of outfit coordination.

Actually, before putting on this outfit, I put a lot of thought into the shaping of the makeup. To reproduce that watery feel of an anime character, I intentionally reduced heavy shading and emphasized the brightness of the eye makeup. The tiny highlights on the eyes and the curliness of the eyelashes beautifully highlight that innocent look, which also fits the lively and active setting. Paired with a naturally orange-toned lipstick, it looks like great health in the camera, forming a wonderful echo with the orange wig. The placement of the hair accessories was also adjusted several times, finally choosing to clip that signature yellow hairpin on the side, so that even if the wind blows and the hair strands float, it won't block the visual focus.

I feel that a good cosplay work doesn't necessarily have to be completed in some magnificent and gorgeous studio. Those street corners, red brick walls, or ordinary pedestrian walkways with a real texture of life can give a character more vitality instead. The shooting process this time was highly enjoyable, just like hanging out on the street with friends after school. Aside from standard frontal shooting, I also really like composition methods that use a high angle or use railings and leaves as foreground blockages, which creates a strong sense of storytelling in the frame, as if we are stealth-shooting a casual glance of hers, vivid and natural.

In terms of photography and post-processing, we did not use overly exaggerated filters and preserved the original colors of the image, only fine-tuning the color temperature and contrast to lean the tone toward warmth and brightness. This is also what I always adhere to: a cosplay photoshoot is actually a type of portrait photography; capturing the person's most relaxed moment wins over forcing a hundred unnatural poses. Looking at the viewfinder showing myself wearing this uniform and carrying a backpack or guitar bag, it feels as if I can really hear the melody of the Light Music Club playing in my ears. This set of photos records this brief and happy roaming time on the streets of Chongqing; even just fiddling with the hem of the clothes or lifting my head is filled with agility, which achieves my goal for this Japanese-style JK theme interpretation.
