Yesterday, I finally finished retouching these two poolside sets. The location was an open-air swimming pool accented with white arches and blue tiles, bathing the scene in luminous ambient sunlight. The first ensemble featured pink hair paired with a white one-piece swimsuit with red piping, complemented by a pair of red horns pinned to the crown. The key advantage of a one-piece in the water is that it stays firmly anchored compared to a bikini, allowing for broader, more dynamic poses. I also wielded a miniature sparkler prop, utilizing rim-lit halos for close-up frames. The second look transitioned to long straight brunette locks and a blue-and-white striped sailor hat, paired with a matching striped bikini and a sheer white beach wrap-skirt. The contrast between the rigid structure of the sailor hat and nautical stripes injected a breezy, retro summer aesthetic.
Swimming pool photography is physically demanding: water resistance is substantial, and intense overhead glare makes keeping eyes open difficult. For most submerged shots, I kept my chin tilted slightly upward, aligning my gaze along the path of incoming light. The sequence shot after stepping onto the tiled steps harnessed side-backlight around 3:00 PM, creating radiant translucency across hair strands and skin. Hair management was the trickiest challenge, as synthetic wigs knot easily once soaked, requiring thorough detangling and makeup touch-ups after each segment. Seeing the play of chiaroscuro and clean water textures made spending hours in the water well worth the effort. Both makeup designs relied on generous setting spray and waterproof mascara; to match the watery clarity, base coverage was kept sheer while smudged eyeliner added narrative depth.
For the pink wig look, I specifically staged continuous burst shots near splashing water to capture hair in kinetic suspension. The sailor hat styling leaned into medium close-ups, accentuating the striped motifs against sun-warmed skin. Beyond managing eye catchlights against water reflections, navigating slick poolside tiles was a constant safety concern. When standing in water, engaging core stability was essential to keep the torso steady. We also tested diverse perspectives—overhead and low-angle shots from a hammock, utilizing colored textile banners as blurred foreground elements to deepen dimensionality. Transitioning from noon sun to golden sunset reflections over ripples, the final color grading preserved clean aqua-blue tones to convey the airy essence of summer.
