The planning for the Reborn cosplay female Qipao group shoot started from a spontaneous idea; after settling on the designs, we rushed to finish this shoot over the weekend.

The outfits needed to match different hairstyles and wigs across various colors—light blue, pink, green, and purple—which, paired with the cut of the modified Qipao, required quite a bit of figure contouring. Especially with the purple set, the lower half featured black Stockings and tall boots, which easily caught dust outdoors, requiring wet wipes on hand for cleaning and constant awareness of posture to avoid snagging the Stockings. The green set was a white long Qipao with frog closures at the collar, accessorized with a small yellow gourd pendant on the chest whose red tassel was perfect for swaying poses. The pink set came with lace gloves, calling for softer, more graceful movements.

The location for the day featured antique carved wooden doors and covered corridors, which are ideal for group shoots, though the lighting conditions were complex with deep shadows. To ensure consistent skin tones across everyone, the lighting had to be evenly balanced, with zoned brightening needed in post-production. When making hand-hearts together, our arms had to stay on the exact same horizontal level to form a heart chain, requiring many tries to nail the angle. The wide-angle selfies turned out very lively, capturing the joyful vibe of going out on a trip together.

During breaks, everyone huddled together to check the raw photos on the camera, helping each other adjust headpieces and outfits—a truly heartwarming scene. Since we were all girls, everyone was relaxed and uninhibited when holding props or posing, making the facial expressions much more natural than forced poses. Especially for close-ups that needed to catch facial subtleties, everyone coordinated wonderfully. Running around an antique building in a Qipao can be slightly inconvenient, but to get great shots, none of that mattered. Building something you love together with friends is genuinely the most charming part of the ACG community. Normally everyone is busy with their own routines, so taking a day to gather is not easy, making every photo precious.

For older fans shooting their all-time favorite anime from Hitman Reborn!, what matters isn't how lavish the costumes are, but whether that familiar nostalgia is there; being able to have fun together is what counts most. From this experience, any cosplay involves tremendous behind-the-scenes effort: loose threads must be clipped, wigs styled into proper curls, and makeup tailored for the lens. The shooting day was long, and while we were tired by the end, seeing the final photos made all the busy prep worthwhile. The four of us took turns acting as photographer to adjust angles, discussing how to make legs look longer and faces look smaller. Sitting or standing on the stone steps of the historical building, every pose was planned together, making the experience truly enjoyable. Oil control and touch-ups were paramount for a group shoot, as unwanted shine would ruin the texture. In post-production, harmonizing color tones took far more time than editing each person individually, especially toning the wooden pillars and background greens to a warmer, vintage texture. After confirming the selfie-angle shots, simple sharpening and light-sculpting plugins were applied to give facial contours a sharper, three-dimensional look.

Our teamwork was remarkably in sync. Looking back on the days of watching the anime compared to doing a Qipao version now was a wonderfully nostalgic feeling. Overall, the atmosphere of this set suited the characters very well, and if another opportunity arises, we'll definitely prepare thoroughly again.
