Today at Autumn Convention Day 2 of the Ryoga anime convention, I cosplayed Rei Ayanami. For this appearance, the makeup and styling were adjusted to better suit the convention floor atmosphere. The overarching color palette centered around four core tones—blue, gray, red, and white—keeping the overall visual cohesive.
The wig was a classic bright blue; I trimmed it into layers with relatively blunt bangs, wearing red contact lenses to align with the character. The eye makeup emphasized reddish-brown eyeshadow blending and elongated eyeliner, granting the gaze a piercing intensity. For the base makeup, I chose a fair foundation and set it generously, knowing one sweats easily on the convention floor. In keeping with the character's demeanor, blush was kept subtle, relying mainly on red lip color to illuminate the face. A matte retro red lipstick was selected to echo the red belt and the red-toned eye makeup.
The top is a gray lace-up cutout vest, whose front cutout naturally offers skin exposure, layered under a blue long-sleeved outerwear piece; for easy maneuvering across the convention halls, the jacket was worn casually slung off the arms. At the collar, a bright blue necktie was crossed and wrapped around the neck in standing front shots to add extra flair. The lower half features raw-hem denim shorts paired with a red leather belt and metal chain for added visual texture. I wore White suspender stockings alongside blue denim leg warmers; the distressed rips and red ribbons on the leg warmers echoed the belt while contouring the leg lines. A dark navy beret sat atop the head, which anchored the wig while enriching styling layers. The black crossbody bag strap also provided a neat visual accent.
Walking the convention all day, the comfort level of this outfit held up well. I used styling wax on the wig to sculpt a lightly tousled texture, preventing it from flattening out. The venue lighting was intricate; when posing for photos, scouting the right light angles was essential to avoid glare and blown-out highlights on the blue wig. To reflect the character's persona, standing poses were slightly restrained—hands resting on hips or holding the bag strap to keep movements natural. I kept a touch-up kit handy throughout the event to maintain the crispness of the red lips and eye makeup. When browsing booths, extra care was needed so the leg warmers wouldn't get stepped on.
The overall tones of the photos complemented this attire beautifully; white and blue felt crisp and clean in frame. This styling holds great visual distinctiveness whether for official photoshoots or walking convention halls. I might experiment with a night shoot in this outfit down the line. As a tip for managing wigs, anti-static spray helps maintain a silky finish under indoor venue lights. Roaming conventions is genuinely a stamina test; I opted for platform shoes to keep walking steady. Utilizing reflectors on site significantly improves photo success rates. All in all, I'm very satisfied with this styling endeavor.
