This derivative styling of Rei Ayanami retains the character's original aloof feeling while incorporating street, wasteland, and a touch of band elements. In terms of makeup and styling, red circle lenses are definitely the soul; the eye makeup intentionally intensified the subtle reddish gradient at the outer corners of the eyes, which, paired with the watery gloss of the lips, creates a detached yet lazy temperament. The wig was trimmed with fragmented layers, and paired with the iconic black bobby pin and cross hairclip, the character's traits immediately became clear.
I especially want to share the costume's details with everyone. The grey-blue halter-neck inner top features cutout and distressed designs, paired outside with oversized blue sleevelets featuring white faux-fur collars, secured by bright red leather buckles—the visual impact of the red-and-blue color blocking is extremely powerful. The lower body consists of raw-hem denim shorts matched with a red belt, and the most special part is the denim oversized flared leg sleeves on the calves, which require red straps to be secured below the knees when wearing; although putting them on and taking them off is a bit tedious, that exaggerated silhouette when walking or posing is truly photogenic. Paired with over-the-knee White stockings, revealing just the right amount of thigh, it retains a well-balanced sexiness amidst the hardcore style, preventing the visual from looking too dull.
Regarding props, the black distressed guitar case really helped a lot, not only increasing the frame's sense of volume, but the red stickers pasted on the case also echoed the red-and-blue theme. The small black plush doll held in hand or hung at the waist breaks the overall cool atmosphere, adding a touch of contrasting fun.
During the shoot, because high-intensity lighting was chosen, the facial shadows are exceptionally clean. Post-processing typography incorporated large areas of red-and-blue color blocking and half-tone dot designs, presenting a vintage pop art poster feel. In pose direction, I tried my best to maintain the character's emotionless traits with a colder gaze. For instance, when sitting sideways, attention was paid to the shoulder-neck lines and leg extension; utilizing the guitar case as support while leaning the body backward nicely showcased the body curves of the waist, abdomen, and legs. Because the leg sleeves are relatively bulky, when sitting or kneeling on one knee, special care had to be taken to showcase the thigh lines wearing White stockings, utilizing the contrast between White stockings and denim to increase frame layering. Every time adjusting postures, attention had to be paid to costume wrinkles and fur collar directions, ensuring the frame is clean and crisp with no redundant dead angles. During shooting, I utilized red-and-blue background lighting to build the atmosphere; this cool light source hitting the face wonderfully accentuates facial features' three-dimensionality. I hope this photo set, combining wasteland style and pop art elements, brings everyone a different visual experience.
