Cosplaying Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion at the Chengdu Anime Convention (World Line) this time, I did plenty of homework from hair and makeup to the actual shoot. The wig was textured with layered cuts, and the forehead bangs were thinned out to make the short blue hair look more natural, accented by a black bow hairpiece on top for extra detail. I chose highly pigmented red contacts, which, paired with fair cool-toned foundation and subtly blended reddish eyeshadow, faithfully recreated that aloof and cool, distant gaze.

The outfit was a blue-grey sleeveless halter dress. The semi-sheer mesh patchwork on the chest offered rich dimension, lined with silver metal buttons and cascading silver chains with circular charms at the ends. Right at the center of the slender waist chain hung a four-pointed star metal pendant, gently swaying with movement. The skirt was a pleated mini with subtle shimmer, catching delicate sparkling reflections under the lights. Both arms were adorned with violet-blue tulle sleeves featuring trailing ribbons, complemented by a matching tulle garter on my right thigh, black ankle socks, and shiny platform leather shoes, creating a unified yet visually engaging color scheme.

Night shoots truly test lighting. The outdoor background was filled with colorful bokeh circles blurred from city lights, while the foreground fill light had to bring out the cool tones of the costume. In the first shot, holding the red long-handled prop—whose spiral silhouette was quite eye-catching—required minding the wrist angle while holding it with one hand, gently touching the chest chains with the other to keep the composition dynamic. In the second shot, I raised a hand to brush back my hair, standing sideways with weight on the back leg and the front knee slightly bent to elongate body lines, capturing the layers of the garter and pleated skirt. In the third shot, glancing back over my shoulder with crossed hands in front, utilizing the sleeve ribbons for visual extension. In the fourth shot, standing with hands clasped behind my back, keeping shoulder and neck lines relaxed yet upright, fixing a steady gaze on the lens.

The convention was bustling that day, so outdoor shooting was a race against time. To maintain Rei Ayanami's quiet demeanor, I barely smiled in front of the camera, keeping expressions restrained and conveying emotion through eye contact and micro-movements. Between takes, I checked compositions with the photographer, ensuring chains didn't obscure my face and skirt pleats hung naturally. The garment fabric is quite lightweight and easily loses shape with broader movements, so every pose required smoothing out the skirt and tulle sleeves beforehand.

Shooting from afternoon until night while standing in platform shoes for hours made the soles of my feet ache, but the night lights and background bokeh were truly perfect for this cool-toned styling. Receiving the raw photos for this Event photo delivery, I felt the metallic textures, sheer mesh layers, and piercing gaze of the red contacts were fully preserved. Convention photos possess an authentic reality without traces of over-editing, locking the on-site lighting and atmosphere into the frame. Every time I cosplay a character, from coordinating outfits and styling wigs to locking in the persona on camera, the process is tedious, but seeing the final photos capture the essence of the character makes all the preparation and legwork completely worthwhile.
