[Rei Ayanami cosplay] White Bandages and Holy Wings, Neon Genesis Evangelion Anime Convention Photo Share

This set of Rei Ayanami convention photos from the Changsha Anime Convention Menghua Anime Exhibition finally came out with that chilly yet somewhat fragile atmosphere. For this bandage outfit, I felt the biggest challenge was in presenting the physical posture, expressing that weightless sense of stillness. During the shoot, I deliberately closed my eyes to feel the light source, and then, guided by the camera, found the most suitable angle. The hair is a smooth light blue wig, and the two white hairpins in the front remained very stable even amidst the convention crowds. The red eyes were the finishing touch; with the eye makeup, because a very light foundation was used, it looked exceptionally translucent, enhancing the hollowness and divinity of those eyes. The white bandages were wrapped very tightly, making it somewhat inconvenient to walk around during the convention, but to ensure authenticity, they were not adjusted the entire time. The large white wings on the back are made of a relatively light gauze material that naturally flows with movement, and when the wind blew during shooting, the atmospheric feel was instantly maximized. There is also the transparent oxygen tube worn on the face and the neck brace—these are crucial parts in restoring the character's design; they look like a kind of confinement, yet also like a life-support system. Amidst the clamor of the real world, this styling carries an otherworldly sense of loneliness. The convention hall was quite large; though crowded, the lighting was clearly divided by zones. Thanks to the photographer's patient snapshots, especially those half-hidden or slightly turned-head glances at the lens, that inhuman sense of detachment was captured. Each of these photos recorded that moment. The tight white and cool-toned background, combined with those stark medical devices, pieced together an emotionless yet endearing specimen. Another difficulty of this outfit was maintaining that gaze-straight-ahead, cold, and aloof expression and posture in a crowded exhibition hall, which was actually quite draining. When shooting this set, the photographer and I had great synergy; blurring the surrounding crowd in the background made it feel as if only this character remained in that space. Without unnecessary embellishments, everything was done as true to the original as possible, striving to breathe a soul into this vessel. Convention photos always involve a bit of luck; good lighting and clever composition are needed to achieve such a set. Looking back at these photos, the creases of the bandages, the glowing red eyes, and the drooping oxygen tube—the tranquility in the frames seems to transcend the screen. This set actually took a very concise approach, discarding extraneous background distractions and relying purely on the character styling and makeup to express itself. Seeing the final photos, the hardships during shooting—the stuffiness of the bandages and the inconvenience of the wings blocking the view—became negligible. That unique world view belonging to Neon Genesis Evangelion gained a touch of tangible manifestation in the photos. I have always felt that this contradictory character styling is very challenging, requiring both inorganic coldness and organic fragility; while preparing this cosplay, I deeply appreciated this balance once again. The final outcome can be said to have captured that elusive, subtle sense of melancholy.
