[Asuka Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion Rock Band Style: Behind-the-Scenes Snapshots

Editing photos until you question your life choices—that’s probably a mandatory course for every cosplayer. I spent the entire afternoon polishing my own face on screen, pulling and pushing the light and shadow, skin tone, and facial features back and forth, only to still feel like something was slightly off when I finally hit the save button. But seeing the overall atmosphere of this red-and-black color scheme in the final edits, I felt that this afternoon of self-battling wasn't in vain. I had been conceiving this rock band style for Asuka ever since I got the outfit: a short black crop top with fluffy white mesh cuffs, paired with a red-and-black plaid pleated leather skirt, leaning toward a punk yet sweet-and-cool vibe. The texture of the wig is incredibly smooth. I adjusted the height and curve of the twin-tails for a long time before finding the perfect angle. Paired with blue contact lenses and eye makeup, I managed to capture that stubbornness and aloofness in her gaze.

The studio environment on the day of the shoot was incredibly interesting—an industrial style photography background with interwoven red and black colors, featuring iron oil drums, wire fences, and a massive pile of messy graffiti, which perfectly matched the untamed and rebellious spirit of a rock band style. The photographer @ALFVC was highly skilled at catching angles, capturing the split-second when I turned back holding a film clapperboard, yielding both a documentary feel of a movie set and a touch of stage improvisation. Although the black slate was just a prop, holding it up genuinely made me feel like a director about to yell "action," except the lens was capturing a version of myself from another dimension. The makeup artist @江东芳心纵火犯 gave me high-definition contouring and highlights that held up beautifully under the lighting, making my facial features pop in this dark environment. With red ambient lights shining on my hair and outfit, the entire frame was deeply saturated with warm tones.

Actually, the hardest part of cosplay isn't often posing or facial expression management, but the post-processing step. I used to think editing was just about slimming the face and smoothing skin. But doing it myself made me realize that bringing back the texture and atmosphere seen by the naked eye requires deep sensitivity to light, color, and structure. I spent most of the afternoon bouncing back and forth between color grading and liquefying, terrified of over-editing it into a fake-looking web image, yet worried that under-editing would make it look unrefined. In the end, I decided to preserve some of the natural skin texture and clothing creases—after all, it's a rock band style, and a raw, gritty feel is also an attitude. The waistline of this look is a detail I absolutely love; the cropped top's waist-revealing design visually elongated my overall proportions significantly, and paired with the leather trim and ruffles of the skirt hem, it creates a gorgeous sense of layering as I move. To find the best angle, I spun around in circles countless times. Although the photos look effortless, the studio was incredibly stuffy, and wearing a wig and leather cap left me drenched in sweat. But seeing that cold, elegant, yet slightly aggressive vibe in the raw files made all the hardship completely worth it.

This set of photos overall adopts a dark industrial aesthetic, which is surprisingly in sync with the psychological distortion themes in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime. I never intended to replicate this character 100% identically; instead, I wanted to capture her core temperament—the attitude of having the sheer confidence to slam that clapperboard down no matter the environment. Although editing is exhausting, being able to transform the image in my mind into a visible reality, step by step from the viewfinder to the screen, is highly rewarding in itself. Let's treat this afternoon's battle as a technical boot camp for myself; hopefully, I'll be able to edit more efficiently next time.
