For this Rei Ayanami cosplay from Neon Genesis Evangelion, I chose the Language of flowers series. The purple material of this dress exhibits fantastic sheen under the lights, making it look stunning on camera. The skirt hem has rich pleated layers, and wearing a petticoat underneath was necessary to maintain fluffiness and volume. The floral accents at the neckline and on the shoes echo each other, serving as visual highlights of this ensemble.
To restore the character's cool and aloof temperament, I wore pink colored contact lenses and trimmed the bangs of the silver-blue wig right along eye level. For makeup, I opted for a cool-toned fair base, blending light pink and pale purple across the eyes with crisp, clean eyeliner. This avoided an overly sweet look while capturing the character's sense of detachment.
The shoot took place inside a convention hall, where the background was naturally quite cluttered. To avoid the crowds and messy surroundings during our Convention photography session, we adopted numerous low-angle upward perspectives and seated poses. Utilizing a wide-aperture lens to blur the background into creamy bokeh, combined with reflective umbrellas and fill lights, created the crisp light-and-dark contrast seen in the final Cosplay photoshoot.
I sat on a small black high stool or leaned sideways against it, letting my leg lines extend naturally. When standing, resting one hand near the collarbone while lightly lifting the skirt hem with the other gracefully displayed the dress's elegant drape and leg proportions. My personal favorite is the shot where I sat on the stool and looked back over my shoulder; the expression was relaxed, and the light fell across my face very naturally.
Throughout the shoot, I carefully adjusted the skirt hem to avoid stepping on it when turning. While adjusting the shoulder straps and the choker around my neck, it felt a bit tight after being worn for so long. Although these poses required constantly pointing my toes and keeping my back straight, seeing the finished photos made all the effort feel completely worthwhile.
During photo retouching, we preserved skin translucency and harmonized the violet-blue palette, striving to faithfully recreate the visual color atmosphere seen in person. As an iconic anime character, Rei Ayanami's innate charm has captivated countless fans; being able to personally interpret different styles of this character as a cosplayer brings a profound sense of fulfillment. This Language of flowers styling preserves her iceberg-like detachment while infusing the light, delicate grace of a floral wreath, making it truly enjoyable to portray.
The placement of fill lights was crucial for showcasing this outfit: because smooth, glossy fabric reflects light easily, improper lighting can look overly greasy, so we adjusted angles to bring out a velvety, subtle shimmering texture. The venue was packed on the shooting day with people walking through the background constantly; to wait for a clean backdrop, we shot over a dozen takes repeatedly in one corner. During the noon break, sitting on a small folding stool or simply resting on the floor against the props unexpectedly produced more relaxed, natural shots—such as the set leaning against the stool. The purple skirt hem spread across the floor looked like a pool of violet watercolor blooming outwards. The silver-tinted hair took on an almost translucent luster under the lens, which, paired with the crimson eyes, delivered tremendous visual impact. The shooting atmosphere on set was relaxed, and the photographer was incredibly patient, encouraging me to relax my expression over and over until capturing the most effortless demeanor.
Every cosplay shoot provides valuable prep experience. To complement the color of this dress, special attention was paid to colored contact lens selection: pink lenses harmonized beautifully with the purple-blue hair and dress without feeling jarring. The floral choker at the neck had to be secured at a specific spot to prevent shifting. For footwear, I chose classic black patent-leather Mary Janes adorned with matching purple mini-flowers. Even though these were taken on-site at a convention, treating them as a full Cosplay photoshoot meant handling not only chaotic lighting but also preventing passersby from creeping into the frame, putting the photographer's framing skills to the test. The funniest moment during the shoot was tripping over the oversized skirt hem when turning around, almost knocking the props over. After every pose, I had to tug at the collar for relief, as that floral neckpiece was surprisingly heavy. Costumes with floral elements capture gentle elegance much more easily than sci-fi battle suits. Because the lighting leaned cool-toned, post-processing maintained that cool aloofness true to the raw images without adding heavy filters. This set faithfully recreated the aesthetic dreaminess of the anime; this experience deepened my understanding of character portrayal—not merely restoring visual appearance, but genuinely channeling the character's soul.
