When friends asked me which studio we shot in, I replied that it was a bar. Indeed, this shoot happened to borrow the small stage inside a bar, where the deep blue curtains paired with a vintage stand microphone pushed the light and shadow atmosphere straight to the max. The character I portrayed this time is Robin from Honkai: Star Rail, and the overall styling leans toward a cool-toned dreaminess and elegance.
The biggest challenge of this shoot was actually the weight of the costume and the balance of the props. The halo on top of my head uses a suspended support structure, feather decorations are spread across the arms and shoulders, and along with that massive metallic-textured staff, it truly required effort to stabilize my center of gravity when posing on set. The first close-up portrait was actually shot many times; since the venue itself was quite dark, studio highlights can often look very harsh, but the photographer @LanqiaoShendeng very meticulously adjusted the light sources, using side lighting to illuminate the contours of the face while preserving the crisp, cool feel of the cold blue ambient light, allowing the smooth texture of the wig and the facial gloss to combine beautifully.
Looking at the full-body photos, everyone can see that the skirt hem features a high-slit design, paired with blue platform high heels. Coordinated with the lightness of the feathers, it visually elongates the overall body proportions. However, this skirt does easily trap the feathers when sitting down; every time I sat or stood up, the assistant had to help tidy the skirt from behind, but to chase perfect frame effects, this was completely worth it. Regarding the shooting location, beyond the spotlights on stage, we also cast a pink grid light and shadow right at the bottom of the frame. Paired with the original deep blue atmosphere, it instantly highlighted the cyber and dreamy vibe of the entire photo, which is one of the reasons I love this photoset. Many people often ignore the overall color palette coordination when shooting such complex characters, thinking that as long as the costume is restored it's fine, but scene light uniformity is actually critical to restoring the character's mental outlook.
Portraying the character of Robin also gave me another realization: her temperament leans toward being quiet and introverted, so I didn't pursue particularly exaggerated effects when making expressions. Instead, I maintained a cool, serene, and peaceful demeanor, hoping to transmit the character's personality through a subtle glimmer in my eyes. Holding the staff while wearing long white gloves brought a strong sense of the character's ritualism. Honestly, when shooting cosplay usually, one frequently encounters problems with highly thick and heavy costume structures. This time was fine; although there were metal components and a vast amount of feathers, the tailoring was quite reasonable, allowing me to move around relatively flexibly.
Lastly, I also want to thank my co-star @Chunyutong for her cooperation, as well as the photographer's emotional guidance behind the lens. To be able to shoot a picture this clean, detailed, and perfectly lit under the complex environmental lighting of a bar truly tests one's shooting proficiency. Often, everyone sees the finished photos and thinks they are beautiful, but the reality on set requires non-stop communication with the photographer regarding light placements and angles; tilting even a tiny bit would cause the shadows of the feathers to eat up the rim light. For this outfit, that feather accessory is genuinely prone to collecting dust, so everyone was constantly cleaning it during shooting intervals.
Overall, this was a highly joyful and smooth creative experience. Although the venue was unexpectedly a bar, the rendered effect conversely held an unanticipated premium feel. I hope there will be more quirky and interesting shooting locations like this in the future, allowing us to integrate anime culture into everyday life scenes and present unusual visual surprises.
