Catching the peak blooming season, I brought pre-prepared picnic props and costumes, heading into suburban woods with my well-coordinated partner to start this spring outing themed shoot. To align with character lore, besides character costumes themselves, we specifically added life-like props such as woven rattan baskets, baguette bread, red apples, and purple flower bouquets, adding a touch of authentic lifestyle flavor to the Spring picnic work.
Controlling outfit details was the highlight of this ACG outdoor location shoot. The black-clad character's styling leans toward crisp and handsome, with a black-and-white suit jacket over a white shirt and red tie forming classic color contrast. Special totem patterns around the collar required precise painting coordinated with makeup to highlight her unique demeanor. Patchwork tulle at the hem added overall flowing elegance, while metal waist chains shimmered with varied luster in sunlight, rendering distinct layers to the outfit. The wig underwent layered crimping and iron curling to achieve ideal fluffiness, while black-and-white striped ears were firmly secured atop hair strands with hairpins to maintain natural upright stance during head turns. Golden decorative strips on the weapon were selected after multiple comparisons to find the optimal weight and size, ensuring it wouldn't feel overly heavy while rendering ample texture under reflections.
The white-top and blue-skirt character's styling focused on cute, charming appeal for Suzuran Cosplay. The light-colored knit top felt soft, paired with a red bow tie and light-blue multi-layered skirt with lace trim edges; combined with white knee-high socks and black round-toe leather shoes, the overall color scheme was extremely gentle. We intentionally placed purple flowers in the prop basket to echo the purple flower sea in the background compositionally. Fluffy tails were a major highlight this time, but because they were large and light-colored, when moving through flower bushes we had to constantly lift the bottom to avoid catching dirt and grass debris.
In pose and composition design, to break away from routine static posing, we referenced character personalities and the concept of "mother-daughter" daily interactions in Arknights. In one frame, the black-clad character leans down slightly, holding a purple bouquet and gently placing it onto the white-clad character's hair ornament, where side-backlighting renders both silhouettes exceptionally soft. In their standing dual shot, the black-clad character leans one hand against a tree trunk, adjusting leg weight distribution so carrying the sword appears effortless, while the white-clad character holds an apple with a playfully cute expression, their eyes meeting in silent dialogue. For solo close-ups, we fully utilized tree branches as foregrounds—for example, the black-clad character plucking a white blossom from a branch with her profile toward the camera, which paired with deep eye makeup highlighted her cool yet gentle character traits.
Regarding scene and lighting choices, to avoid harsh midday sunlight, we concentrated shooting around 10 AM and 3 PM. Light and shadow filtering through leaves created rich depth on flowers, and the photographer lowered light contrast to ensure white hair, black clothing, and light-blue skirts showed neither overexposure nor crushed blacks. Another difficulty of outdoor shooting was managing character postures interacting with surroundings—avoiding branch blockages while letting background flower fields project depth.
A complete ACG outdoor location photoshoot requires extensive preparation and on-site scheduling. Outfit restoration needed repeated confirmation, wigs required on-site grooming to avoid frizz, and prop placement/movement had to synchronize completely with shooting rhythms. Although tired after shooting, seeing characters and nature blending seamlessly in the viewfinder made every preparation feel totally worth it. This photo set recorded not just character appearances, but our journey of carefully experiencing character mindsets and feeling the Spring picnic vibe. Immersive playing is the most fascinating part of Cosplay, and I hope this spring lightness can be passed along through these images.
