[Saga Cosplay] Welcoming the Shiba God for the New Year: Light and Shadow Log in Hangzhou Forest

Stepping onto the bluestone steps in front of Hangzhou's Lian Temple in this outfit, feeling the faint sunlight filtering through the archway, an instant sense of immersion as a wandering monk came over me. A lot of photos were selected and edited for this set. After reviewing the final retouched shots, I was personally very satisfied with the outcome. Though there wasn't much feedback after posting, I wanted to take this opportunity to document my shooting ideas and the details of this costume. In fact, I've always loved the concept of this foodie shiba dog, and the theme of welcoming the Shiba God for the New Year perfectly matched the timing of this location shoot.

The costume was the central focus of this outdoor shoot. The upper body features a deep blue wide-sleeved outer robe paired with a layered cloud-pattern lining inside, anchored at the waist with rigid black armor pieces that offer a solid, tactile quality. For the lower half, I specifically chose violet bloomers paired with high white stockings. This combination strikes a balance between combat functionality and fantasy aesthetics. The wig features classic purple-black gradient hair, accompanied by signature fluffy dog ears and a prominent white tail that steals the show with its cuteness. Despite the numerous accessories, moving through the forest felt completely natural without feeling heavy.

The location was chosen near Lian Temple in Hangzhou, where lush vegetation, towering trees, and dappled shadows served as a natural studio. What captivated me most during this shoot was the interaction of light and shadow. We didn't rely heavily on powerful fill lights, depending entirely on the sunlight filtering through the canopy. In several scenes, the photographer cleverly blurred orange and yellow foreground leaves, creating a cinematic, breathing atmosphere. Particularly in the shots standing deep in the woods, the orange foreground bokeh enveloped the character in warm tones, creating an incredible color contrast against the deep blue robe.

For props, I selected a slender metal cane. On the steps and stone slabs, it acted as both support and a beautiful lead line within the frame. I especially love the shot leaning against a tree trunk—the cane rests casually nearby, my body relaxes naturally, and an arm raises to block the overhead light while the white stockings and violet pants take on vivid dimension along the strong light-and-shadow boundary line. The weather was immensely cooperative, with sunlight breaking through the canopy to produce a striking Tyndall effect that illuminated the stone steps, water surfaces, and blue robe with exceptional texture.

Since this is Saga, that foodie dog personality had to shine through subtly. Although I wasn't actually eating in the photos, I used the cane, my sitting postures, and a slightly uptilted chin to convey a carefree, easygoing vibe. A wandering monk calls the world home, finding novelty in everything. Combining this unrestrained mindset with the auspicious sentiment of welcoming the Shiba God for the New Year, I hope everyone viewing these photos can feel that sense of contented satisfaction after a hearty meal.

Retouching took quite some time. Rather than over-editing colors, I chose to preserve the natural hues of the forest as much as possible, softening dark shadows slightly to give the skin a gentler texture. Shooting such a set near West Lake makes "Hangzhou photography booking" feel like a truly fitting description.

As to whether these photos will resonate with a wider audience, I do feel a bit nervous. However, putting on this costume and immersing myself as a little Shiba God amidst the forest light and shadows was already a deeply joyful experience in itself.
