You've waited long, Sensei. This time at the comic convention, I finally managed to arrange the convention photos of Ryuge Kisaki in her cheongsam. To efficiently get good photos on-site, the preliminary preparation work is actually very tedious. For this modified cheongsam with a deep blue base and golden dragon-pattern totems, I deliberately looked for a fabric that is slightly elastic and has an excellent reflective texture in terms of material selection, so that it can maintain its texture even under the complex lighting inside the venue. To match this cheongsam, I chose high-gloss dark pantyhose (black stockings) and black glossy high heels, which makes the overall visual more consistent and better elongates the leg lines. The blue-and-gold butterfly hair ornament on the head is also key to recreating the setting, and the details must not be sloppy at all.
Shooting convention photos is always full of challenges. The overhead lights in the venue are usually messy flat lighting. To overcome this problem, this time we used the combination of Sony A7C2 and the 28-75mm G2 lens. This focal length is very flexible in a crowded venue, allowing us to take full-body shots and quickly zoom in for close-ups. To avoid the bustling crowds in the background, we found a relatively secluded corner and borrowed a step ladder as a compositional aid. The pose in picture one, sitting on the ladder with crossed legs, actually requires a certain amount of core strength, but the resulting effect is extremely good—it not only showcases the texture of the black stockings and the outline of the high heels, but also maxes out the overall aura. The photographer used side-backlighting with fill light to outline the edges of the character's body.
Picture two is a front view sitting on the ground, with the body leaning slightly forward, gaze looking straight into the lens, paired with gloved hand gestures, which can well showcase Kisaki's composure yet slightly oppressive temperament. Since they are convention photos, the unavoidable messy background is the biggest pain point. Therefore, in post-processing, I directly desaturated the background, performing a low-saturation grayscale treatment, leaving all the color space to the main character, making that dash of deep blue and bright gold the absolute visual center.
The shooting site is actually very physically demanding; wearing high heels and stockings while repeatedly adjusting postures on the step ladder and floor is quite a test of physical stamina. But every time I see the texture of light and shadow hitting the gold patterns of the cheongsam in the raw photos, along with the smooth and sleek leg lines, that sense of satisfaction is hard to describe in words. From the preparation of costumes and props in the early stage, to the adjustment of camera positions and capturing of light and shadow on-site, to the color extraction in post-processing, every link serves the final image. This set of convention photos perfectly achieved the effect I expected.
