[Riyo Cosplay] Gachiakuta: Fighting Spirit Enwrapped in Red-Orange Light and Shadow - Image 1

The outdoor photoshoot realization of the character Riyo from Gachiakuta is finally officially meeting everyone today. From deciding on this character to the final output of this cosplay photoshoot, it went through a very long preparation process. Especially for the sharp lines with a wasteland street style in the work, we made many restoration considerations in the 3D world.

Let's talk about the outfit first. Riyo's upper body features a short jacket spliced with gray-white and black, with a pure white short tube top layered inside; grasping the proportions of the black, gray, and white tri-color scheme was highly critical. To restore the character's functional/techwear feel, we specially chose a slightly stiffer fabric to make the jacket, so that the shoulder silhouettes could be propped up under the low-angle upward perspective. That iconic yellow circular icon on the left chest was added via an embroidered patch in post-processing; against the overall black and gray base tone, that lively splash of yellow served as an excellent accent. The white belt at the waist and that small brown crossbody bag are also key points of restoration, where the leather texture took the accuracy of minor details a step further.

What tested the preparation work most was definitely this huge prop weapon. It features sharp geometric lines, with a giant openwork ring at the top serving as the visual core. To ensure it had a certain reflective texture during shooting, we sprayed and polished the prop surface. Although swinging it by hand was somewhat laborious due to its size and dead weight, it also gave the overall presentation more substance.

To highlight the character's wild and explosive combat temperament, we also put quite a lot of effort into the hair and makeup. That vibrant high ponytail with red hair was not combed directly into a sleek look, but went through a lot of backcombing and volumizing treatments to give it a messy feel filled with battle traces. Some stray hairs were also intentionally left at the forehead and sideburns, which, paired with the overall crisp styling of the costume, makes the figure in the frame look much more agile.

The color palette and light-and-shadow design on the day of the shoot are my favorite parts so far. Instead of using a complex real-scene set, we directly chose a highly saturated solid orange-red background wall. For lighting, high-power flashes and hard light were used to emphasize the contours of the figure and props. The low-angle shot camera position combined with a downward torso posture, topped off with my left hand resting on my forehead, can build a highly tense emotional mood that harbors both a pre-battle relaxation and hidden power. To maintain this posture while shouldering that giant prop weapon with my right hand, my waist and arms had to exert force for a very long time, and the crew and photographer beside me were highly patient in helping me find the best angles.

The shooting process was actually quite tough. Because the costume is quite short and lacks complex thickened inner linings, the exposed waist and abdomen were highly prone to catching a cold or getting bumped by the prop. However, to pursue that sharp visual look, necessary trade-offs had to be made. Additionally, to prevent the ponytail from looking rigid, we constantly adjusted its tilting angle with styling spray mid-shoot, striving to ensure that even when frozen in a frame, the hair strands feel like they are moving with the wind.

Looking at the finalized playback images in the viewfinder, the orange-red background perfectly set off the character's styling and color scheme to be even more eye-catching. Although the consumption of physical energy and mental focus was substantial from early preparation to the end of the shoot, being able to deliver this atmosphere combining both sharpness and wildness is indeed the best feedback for this Cosplay photography practice. Honestly, being able to capture seventy to eighty percent of this character's essence makes this work highly rewarding.
