Taking advantage of the bald cypress woods turning deep red, I brought this autumn-vibe Marisa outfit outdoors for a photoshoot. Photographer Wuyu Ruoye is very experienced in capturing light and shadow, choosing this riverside grove filled with tall deciduous trees. Warm autumn sunlight filtered through the canopy, naturally cloaking the entire setting in a soft-focus filter.
In fact, quite a few detail adjustments were made to this costume's recreation. While Marisa's classic look leans toward a simple apron and black-and-white color scheme, this vest-dress jacket added double-breasted gold buttons and ruffles. The printed scarf with a red base at the neckline was also specifically chosen for a retro dress aesthetic, which, paired with a wide-brimmed white lace-trimmed hat, looked exceptionally bright amidst the dense cypress woods. The skirt hem and cuffs featured spliced beige translucent fabric with lace trims; despite the numerous decorations, the layered movement while walking turned out fantastic without appearing bulky.
The wig was a custom-made pale golden long curly wig. To match this dress aesthetic, the hair on both sides was gathered in slightly to ensure facial contours weren't obscured too much. For footwear, I chose black platform Mary Janes paired with white lace short socks. Shooting on the dry ground covered with fallen leaves, these shoes were comfortable, didn't make legs look short, and visually flattered leg shapes.
The prop for this Cosplay photography shoot was a vine staff. The base was coiled into a thick ring using hemp rope, allowing it to rest firmly on the ground even if unsupported by my own strength. Vines wrapped around the long staff gave it a slightly rugged, wild texture that blended naturally with dry autumn grass and the Fallen leaves vibe across the ground.
It was already deep autumn when shooting this set, with gentle breezes blowing by the water and fine ripples sparkling on the river surface. Light was at its best around three or four in the afternoon—golden slanting sunlight pierced through tree leaves onto my body, rendering costume textures and fabric weaves clearly visible. The photographer mentioned she values authentic light and shadow, avoiding heavy reliance on intense post-processing special effects; thus, much effort went into finding angles on set, such as having me tilt my head slightly or turn sideways so the hat brim naturally cast shadows, or utilizing skirt movement to express playfulness.
Since the character in Touhou Project is originally styled as a direct, straightforward magician while this outfit leans more ladylike, I kept poses as relaxed as possible, focusing on interaction—such as holding the staff handle with one hand or turning my head toward the camera with gentle eyes rather than overly exaggerated expressions. Autumn and winter tones are actually harder to grade than bright summer palettes, but in the final photos, the reddish-brown background, warm yellow light, and predominantly dark attire yielded a comfortable overall contrast brimming with ambient feel.
Many people are curious whether a character in dress style can blend into a forest environment. In truth, as long as color combinations don't clash—such as using warm-toned accessories (the red scarf) to highlight the dark main dress—the character pops right out from the background. Moreover, cypress forests make a fantastic choice for an Autumn outdoor scene, as neatly arranged trunks and unified color tones effortlessly create visual depth in every shot.
This shoot not only accomplished character recreation, but also captured autumn's unique essence through this scenery. For me, walking down a path covered in fallen leaves in this attire carried a magical feeling of stepping out of a fantasy setting straight into a real season, and I'm thrilled to record this picture completely.
