Cosplaying Nia from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 made me feel quite nervous at first. Nia is a deeply nuanced and warm character whose design is instantly recognizable in terms of color palette and tailoring. Taking advantage of fine autumn weather, I completed this ACG outdoor location shoot in a reed bed near the water, and the overall atmosphere turned out even better than expected.
Starting with the costume details: pure white serves as the main color, outlined with gold trim and highlighted by a striking blue gem at the neckline, making the overall look visually crisp and clean. The upper body tailoring exposes shoulders and collarbones, requiring extensive early adjustments to ensure chest support and collar fit. The sleeve design is a major highlight—detached wide sleeves paired with white gloves and black wrist guards flutter dynamically in the wind. The lower body features red-and-white paneled over-the-knee boots, with slight pattern adjustments made to the lower hem so it wouldn't snag on vegetation while moving through the reeds.
The beast-ear headpiece was crafted from a firm material to ensure it retained its arched shape under strong winds without drooping out of form. The white wig felt smooth, but with bangs and long strands, it easily tangled in the wild gusts, requiring constant combing between takes. The makeup avoided heavy, artificial layering to preserve natural skin texture, only subtly deepening reddish-brown eyeshadow tones to match her frank yet gentle disposition.
The location was a reed cluster by the water, with a faint mountain skyline and open water surface in the distance. This setting heavily tested lighting control for an Outdoor portrait, as autumn and winter natural light can easily become harsh. Preferring a gentle glow filter feel, most shots were framed with side-backlighting or diffuse natural lighting. The earthy reed tones harmonized beautifully with the character's white, red, and gold palette, creating a natural, welcoming warmth.
The strong wind during the shoot presented a fun little challenge. The dynamic flying strands of hair and billowing hem captured in the photos were the result of riding out several gusts of wind. Maintaining natural gaze and body posture required frequent switching between standing and seated poses. The pose in Photo 4, with one arm raised and one leg slightly lifted, perfectly caught the moment the gust picked up—the wide sleeves flared in the wind, making me feel truly at one with the character at that instant.
Recreating a character tests not only costume precision but also how to convey their vivid vitality within a real-world setting. Nia in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 evokes warmth and inner strength, so during shooting I deliberately avoided overly contrived poses, opting instead to capture candid moments—gazing into the distance or quietly closing my eyes to feel the wind. Post-processing preserved substantial detail without excessive skin smoothing, aiming to keep the genuine glow of natural sunlight on skin. Highlights on the reeds were subtly brightened to make the backlit aesthetic feel even clearer.
The overall output turned out exceptionally comfortable. Combining Cosplay photography with natural landscapes always amplifies a character's beauty into a wonderfully authentic dimension. For fans who love Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Nia holds many special memories, and I hope my version of Nia brings a warm, familiar feel.
