[Cirno cosplay] Ice Fairy Under the Blazing Sun: Mastering the Convention photo Shoot

Shooting this Touhou Project Cirno cosplay convention photo session under the scorching midday sun was truly a physical challenge, but the final results made everything completely worth it. Because the character design has so many rich elements, preparing the outfit and organizing everything on-site took quite some time. The most intricate part of this costume design is the skirt—layers of white lace and ice-blue ruffles, paired with the eye-catching large red bow. Due to the puffy fabric, even a gentle breeze would obscure the leg lines, so I had to constantly adjust the skirt's position during the shoot.

The crystal props in hand and the surrounding floating crystal effects were the core of the entire look. These physical props actually carry some weight; to achieve that floating look in the shots, we experimented with different angles and ways of holding them. For instance, the one-legged jumping pose was physically demanding—maintaining balance while keeping bodily lines stretched and graceful really tested core and waist strength. At the same time, I had to manage my expression and gaze to avoid looking stiff from intense concentration. Aside from the dress and props, my favorite parts of the day were the makeup and hair. The light blue wig framed my face nicely after styling, and the matching bow headpiece had great volume. Paired with a light makeup look, it perfectly brought out the character's innocent yet slightly tsundere personality.

Since this was an outdoor shoot, the harsh lighting and noisy passersby made me worry at first that extreme lighting contrast would make my face look overly harsh. Fortunately, the photographer utilized shaded areas and reflectors to prevent my face from being overexposed. In terms of knee and hosiery details, to stay faithful to the character design, I paired the outfit with lace-trimmed white stockings. While squatting, I had to control the curve of my legs while minding the skirt's placement, taking multiple shots to find the ideal angle unobstructed by the fabric. We also had to constantly monitor the crystal reflection angles to catch the colorful refractions, bringing out the icy texture to the fullest.

This shoot explored squatting, standing, and jumping poses, wonderfully capturing the dynamic realism and agility of an on-location shoot. True character fidelity lies not only in the costume but also in authentic expressions. Despite minor challenges along the way—like limited mobility from the heavy skirt and squinting against the harsh sun—the team coordinated seamlessly to showcase the character's personality as much as possible. Choosing this jumping shot for the cover was ideal: it has a full, centered composition, lively motion, and neatly shows off the leg lines and lace-trimmed white stockings, striking a great balance between overall harmony and visual appeal. This convention photo shoot experience was truly fun and gave me a fresh understanding of the outdoor cosplay photography process.
