Putting on this Lucia cosplay outfit, my first impression was that the sheer amount of detail across the entire costume far exceeded expectations. Especially for the mechanical device on the right arm, many micro-adjustments were made to its internal support and arm fit beforehand to present a realistic sense of metallic wrapping and structural layering in the photos. Although the range of motion was limited during the shoot, this realistic physical feedback actually brought me closer to the character's state. The combination of the tight-fitting glossy material and the black leather collar maxed out the overall techwear vibe, and when paired with the garter ring decorated with a golden key, it beautifully outlined the character's silhouette in front of the lens.
The scene in the third picture is a setting I absolutely love from this shoot; those CRT monitors and oscilloscopes carry a dense retro-sci-fi atmosphere. To make the character pop in this environment, we chose hard light sources to illuminate the highlight areas, including the metal pieces on the boots and the geometric color blocks on the clothing. During the shoot, I didn't intentionally strike rigid combat poses; instead, I chose to sit on a chair, bending my legs naturally, and paired it with a confident smile to showcase the character's relatively playful and in-control side. Thanks to the glitter eyeshadow in the makeup, paired with the color of the eyes, it looked exceptionally vivid under the faint cool light reflected from the monitor screens.
Wearing the wig and animal ears also took a lot of thought. The lightness of the short hair combined with the mechanical animal ears on top of my head required repeated angle adjustments before shooting to ensure they wouldn't look out of place in any composition. Although this cyberpunk outfit looks incredibly cool in terms of costumes and props, maintaining a prime condition during the actual shoot was not easy. Especially in the first photo, the action of holding up a book with one hand actually required core strength for support, while also controlling the tension in the arm muscles to keep the image from looking too stiff. I also tried hard to find a sense of contrast in the reading state of the second photo, showcasing a relaxed temperament outside of combat.
Regarding props, that heavy, metallic-looking notebook was also crucial; its weight in my hand perfectly echoed the texture of the mechanical arm. The segmented leather texture of the boots, the zippers, and the golden teardrop-shaped clasps at the bottom create a linked effect when moving. To capture this sense of movement, we specially walked around the studio a few more times for dynamic snapshots. The cooperation of these details ultimately determined the final quality of this set of works.
In post-processing, the main idea was to preserve the contrast between the warm and cool light on set, letting the clean fairness of the skin collide with the deep texture of the clothing. Since the overall tone leans toward cool colors, I maintained a relatively light and active state in my facial expressions to balance the weight of the visuals. This process of anime recreation, transforming a two-dimensional setting into a real-world image, gives me a wondrous experience of breaking the dimension wall every time I see the finished photos. The joy of cosplay photography lies not only in recreating the appearance but also in pondering the character's state and temperament in a specific environment. This creative experience was both a challenge and a highly rewarding new attempt for me.
