This pose—arching backward across a stepladder—was settled on only after comparing reference artwork with the photographer for a long time. Because my body had to remain suspended mid-air, relying entirely on lower-back support and hands to maintain equilibrium, losing center of gravity even slightly would have tipped both me and the ladder over. To capture that authentic sensation of weightlessness, I adjusted my angles repeatedly on the ladder until my core strength was practically exhausted.
Capturing characters with large-scale floating poses in a live white studio imposes rigorous demands on garment dynamics and physical expression. This outfit is intricate in detail and lightweight in fabric; to make the subject stand out crisply, we dedicated considerable effort to lighting design. The key light had to penetrate hair strands and the sheer edges of the chiffon, while rim backlighting contoured body lines, all while keeping the metallic hardware and harness straps sharp and legible. To recreate that weightless dynamic tension, my arms and legs needed to extend fully, pushing the visual weight outward toward the extremities.
Completing the studio shoot was only step one; composite post-production was the true centerpiece. Because we aimed for that sensation of falling through a starry cosmic abyss, the white studio plates had to be shot immaculately clean. After isolating the subject, the photographer composited in a celestial backdrop alongside a colossal mechanical entity. To match the perspective between the live subject and the 3D mecha, we simulated framing during the shoot itself—the upward camera angle and the reach of my arms were mapped to interact naturally with that gargantuan construct. In particular, matching the color temperature and luminance between the mecha's edge highlights and the subject's rim lighting kept the final frame seamless and cohesive.
To ensure the pose achieved dimensional depth, we tested numerous methods just to dial in the drape and flow of the chiffon veil. There was no natural breeze in the white studio, so everything depended on the assistant holding the veil corners and releasing them right as the shutter clicked to freeze that natural, billowed drift. Throughout the session, I barely dared to breathe deeply, fearing any muscle relaxation would collapse the graceful arch of the spine.
From early pose brainstorming and live studio shooting to the meticulous composite of starry skies and mechanical props, the entire workflow was undeniably grueling.
