Collaborating with my partner on this Afterglow duo outdoor shoot involved extensive preparation, from hair and makeup to location scouting. The defining trait of Ran Mitake lies in that contrast where she appears somewhat rebellious on the outside, yet holds deep responsibility and cohesive leadership at heart. To match her rock vibe, I did plenty of homework on the outfit. The lightning bolt graphic on the black short-sleeve T-shirt served as the visual centerpiece, which, paired with a metal-studded leather choker, a grommeted wide belt, and heavy black platform Martin boots, dialed the hardcore grit of the outfit to the max. For hairstyling, the black base with that striking red streak across the front was the soul of the look. Trimming and styling the wig took considerable time, particularly aligning the angle of the red hairpiece, which required constant adjustments to look organic yet instantly recognizable in this Ran Mitake cosplay.
For the outdoor location on the day of the shoot, we chose an urban rooftop and stairwell area featuring metal mesh grating. This touch of industrial grit and urban street style seamlessly matched the band's gritty aesthetic of growing wild within the city. Working with my Moca Aoba partner felt completely in sync. Our creative concept was to capture both the independent aura of each character and the profound bond between them. Before the lens, we explored conversational postures leaning against railings, casual poses seated on the grated platform gazing into the camera, and shoulder-to-shoulder interactions. Because the lower half was paired with Black over-the-knee socks and platform boots, the photographer skillfully framed the elongated contours of our legs. The absolute territory between the over-the-knee socks and shorts, combined with the lengthening lift of the platform boots, made overall proportions look sleek and tall, serving as a standout visual accent of this styling. Truth be told, while platform Martin boots look fiercely commanding in photos, walking in them is quite physically taxing; we took multiple breaks between takes to rest for these perfect frames.
The beauty of cosplaying as a duo is that emotions flow reciprocally. That unspoken chemistry between Ran Mitake and Moca Aoba surfaced organically before the camera. We smoothed each other's wigs and adjusted outfits, brainstorming which poses would look most natural for the next shot. The photographer, Kelan, was remarkably professional with sharp mastery over light, shadow, and angles, cleverly utilizing the natural sunlight filtering through architectural crevices to render clear skin while preserving the tactile textures of the fabric and leather goods without cumbersome lighting rigs. Outdoor shoots are demanding—squatting, standing, and continually readjusting postures along staircases—yet seeing the finished photos made every effort worthwhile. Through this shoot, I gained a deeper appreciation for the character and fell further in love with constructing worlds through attire, props, and emotion. Passion for BanG Dream! is what fuels my drive to refine every single detail, and I look forward to exploring even more diverse character styles down the road.
