This shoot features Istina's JR collaboration look from Arknights. I believe players familiar with this character know that Istina's setting in the game is a member of the Ursus Student Self-Government Group, usually presenting a very bookish scholar image. However, this JR collaboration version incorporates more cute and light retro elements, instantly turning the originally serious bookworm into a fluffy detective bear. When I got this outfit, I felt the texture was very nice, especially the combination of the brown shawl and the plaid pleated skirt, which has a British style without looking overly heavy.
To match this "detective" and "scholar" setting, photographer Kelan chose a highly classic vintage wooden study room as the shooting venue. The dark wood paneling, beautifully framed vintage oil paintings on the wall, and rows of display cabinets filled with old books created a perfect atmospheric vibe. In such a scene, holding a half-worn reddish-brown hardcover notebook and a brass-handled magnifying glass, I truly felt like I was Istina herself, looking up the Ursus archives.
In terms of makeup and styling, I also maintained control over the details. Although the gray wig is relatively light in color, it perfectly highlights the clean and translucent makeup. The round-frame glasses are one of the souls of this look, instantly adding an intellectual aura. To match the cute attribute of the "bear," the white animal ears and black bow on the hat are very eye-catching, adding a touch of playfulness to the originally rational attire. The hem of the cape and the ruffled shirt at the neckline were also adjusted to ensure that the folds of the clothes presented a natural drape during movements, instead of looking rigid.
This set of photos was edited very quickly, and the overall color tone was set to a warm yellow. Everyone knows that if the light in a retro study room is not handled properly, it can easily become dull or gray. Therefore, in the post-color grading, I intentionally preserved the details in the dark areas while brightening the highlights, making the skin tone translucent and bringing out the texture of the clothes. Especially that notebook, it presented a vintage leather texture under the warm light. While shooting this set, I was still wondering, will many people cosplay a relatively less "popular" operator like Istina? But after finishing it, I found that such less popular characters actually offer a high degree of freedom. There's no need to conform to a stereotypical "recreation"; instead, one can start from their own understanding of the character to interpret their own style in this Anime-style fashion. This retro style photography really allowed for a unique interpretation.
During the shoot, many small props were used to enrich the actions. For example, lifting the magnifying glass to make an observing gesture not only fits the detective setting but also elongates the posture, preventing the frame from looking too rigid. There is also the feeling of holding a book and gazing into the lens, or standing in front of a bookshelf looking down to flip through a book; these are highly suited to her quiet, introspective personality background. For shoes, I chose black knee-high socks with black leather shoes, a combination that shifts the visual center of gravity downward and helps shape the legs, making the overall look more clean and neat.
I feel that the joy of Arknights cosplay lies not just in visual similarity, but more in whether the photos can convey the character's spirit. Although Istina doesn't have much plot in Arknights, I really like her personality—focused on knowledge, somewhat cutely dorky, yet extremely reliable. Being able to shoot a set of her collaboration look this time counts as fulfilling a small wish. From preparation to shooting and post-processing, the overall process of this set was very smooth. Huge thanks to the photographer and support crew for their cooperation. I hope this look can bring everyone a feeling slightly different from usual, allowing a less popular character to shine.
