This photo set is a spring location shoot in collaboration with Mr. Mubai, where another cosplayer and I together restored the classic characters of Asuka and Rei Ayanami. Since the theme we shot is "Farewell, all of EVANGELION," during planning, we actually wanted to use the exceptionally bright imagery of spring cherry blossoms to endow these two characters, who carry heavy pasts, with a sense of gentle reconciliation and relief.
In terms of preparing the styling and outfits, this classic school uniform was the key focus of the recreation. A white shirt, a deep blue sleeveless overshirt, a slender red ribbon tie, as well as Asuka's red twin-tails with signature hair clips, and Rei's light blue short hair. Although this basic style of clothing looks simple, restoring its texture and fit actually highly tests the skills of the tailor and stylist. On the day of the shoot, the sunlight was fantastic. The light filtered down through the cherry blossom trees, casting on the folds of the clothes and strands of hair, creating a texture of light and dark contrast that perfectly fits the fresh Japanese-style portrait genre.
The biggest challenge of shooting cosplay outdoors is actually the wind. Wigs easily get messed up by the wind, especially my red wig—the ends are very heavy, and it easily gets frizzy when the wind blows. However, the photographer Mr. Mubai is very good at utilizing this natural environment; he told us not to deliberately pin down our hair, and that letting our hair flutter naturally in the wind would instead enhance the characters' vitality and the dynamic feel of the scene. When shooting that single-person profile shot of reaching out to touch the cherry blossoms, a gentle breeze happened to brush past, creating a layered effect of light and shadow over the hair strands and petals, and that captured moment was truly full of ethereal grace.
In the photo where we sit back-to-back on a stone platform, the leg styling details of both characters are also beautifully displayed. Rei wears over-the-knee black socks paired with white sneakers, while I wear white calf socks with black stripes paired with Martin boots. This kind of "preppy academy style" uniform styling itself possesses high recognizability in ACG culture. The overall composition of the stone platform not only elongates the visual proportions, but the quiet posture of the two sitting back-to-back perfectly presents that subtle alienation and coexistence inherent in the original characters' relationship.
Regarding the post-processing part, my personal habit is to remain as restrained as possible. I didn't use extremely exaggerated filters or heavy color grading, but instead preserved the original color temperature under the natural spring light, slightly brightening the colors of the environment and plants a tiny bit to make the entire set look more translucent. The blue sky, white cherry blossoms, and green grass in the background blend together beautifully, radiating a strong youthful vibe. Mr. Mubai's focusing during the shoot was incredibly solid; even in a backlit environment, the character details were completely preserved.
Honestly, when it comes to doing cosplay, I've always felt that the most important part is emotional expression. For a great location shoot, besides having the costumes and props in place, the key is whether it can resonate with the surrounding environment and the characters' states. During this shoot, as we stood by the riverbank watching the passing pedestrians and the occasionally falling white petals, I would sometimes have the illusion that "they actually live in this kind of daily routine." The boundary between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds became blurred at this moment.
After the final photos came out, I especially loved the way the sunlight evenly dusted my shoulders. Whether looking down at the blossoms or sitting quietly gazing into the distance, under the photographer's lens, the subtle thoughts of the characters were captured thoroughly. This is probably the charm of portrait photography, and it is the ultimate presentation that those of us who love recreating characters want to pursue. Thank you so much to Mr. Mubai for his hard work, allowing us to capture such atmospheric photos this spring.
