[Tsukumo Benben cosplay] Touhou Project: Gorgeous Western-style dress and Exquisite Props - Image 1

For this shoot, we focused on the look of Tsukumo Benben from Touhou Project, with the primary goal of highlighting the contrast between the layered softness of a classic Western dress and structured, solid props.

The outfit is a creamy-white lace Gorgeous Western-style dress, adorned with delicate ruffles along the neckline and cuffs. A black ribbon tied into a bow accents the chest, paired with golden earrings and a matching brooch on either side. Layering these elements creates a lavishly detailed ensemble that naturally encourages a poised, upright posture the moment it is worn.

The wig features a light purple hue, styled with blunt bangs and low twin pigtails on both sides. For the headpiece, I selected an oversized white floral ornament draped with silver chains and beads, which harmonizes with the dress's lace texture to add a lively, ethereal touch.

The long staff in hand serves as the key centerpiece among the Exquisite props. Crafted with a dark shaft, it is wrapped in white lace ribbons and adorned with cascading pearl strands alongside several white blossoms. The prop carried noticeable weight, demanding solid arm strength and control. We tested several grip angles during the shoot, primarily to catch light refractions across the bead strands while maintaining a balanced tilt that complemented the drapery of the gown.

To align with the cool-toned wardrobe and hair, the makeup emphasized lucid, crystalline eyes, utilizing grey-purple contact lenses to echo the overall palette. The blush was kept subtle, relying on a clean foundation and refined lip color to accentuate the character's signature aloof elegance, which is vital for this aesthetic.

Throughout the shoot, movements had to be carefully restrained to preserve the delicate lace, as sweeping motions could easily cause unsightly wrinkles; diverse expressions were instead achieved through subtle angle adjustments. While dialing in posture and lighting took considerable time, seeing the classical opulence realized in the final shots felt entirely faithful to the character design.

Recreating detail-heavy characters always offers a deeper appreciation for garment structures and accessories. We made numerous adjustments to balance the wig and props—such as ensuring the staff's pearl chains draped at the exact length to prevent tangling. I hope these photos offer some helpful inspiration for styling intricate dresses and arranging props.
