This monochrome black-and-white Marisa dress is quite a classic version. Dressing up took considerable time to arrange the layers of the skirt hem. The outer white lace is soft, but the inner black petticoat provides great structure; paired with the oversized witch hat, Blonde twin tails styling, and the broom, the character's basic silhouette was established. The broom prop was fairly heavy, leaving my arms a bit sore after holding it for long stretches, so I had to set it down and rest between takes.
The outdoor location was chosen next to a wooden cabin surrounded by grass and flowers. Because the natural light was quite strong, we used reflectors to fill light on my face during shooting to make skin tones look more radiant and translucent. For the shots on the grass, the photographer had me extend my legs toward the lens; utilizing wide-angle perspective nicely elongated my leg lines, which, paired with black stockings (Black stockings cosplay) and chunky platform Mary Janes, added stronger visual tension to the frame.
The indoor portion was shot inside the wooden cabin, utilizing plenty of warm light sources (Vintage wooden cabin photography). The cabin's floors, tables, and chairs inherently have vintage textures, pairing beautifully with this lace-trimmed dress. During shooting, postures had to be constantly adjusted to avoid accidental exposure while simultaneously maintaining expressive facial nuances. For example, in the shot leaning on the wooden table, I adjusted my chin-resting posture several times to ensure my gaze was precisely focused in the right direction.
The photos of sitting on a stool inspecting a small box and sitting on the stairs with closed eyes were actually candid captures of my natural state, carrying a subtly thoughtful, reflective demeanor. This outfit has abundant details—especially the lace ruffles along the neckline and cuffs—so skin smoothing couldn't be overdone during post-processing to avoid losing the fabric's tactile quality. Furthermore, because I wore black tights under warm lighting, I deliberately controlled the reflections along my legs in post to maintain that matte yet sleek texture characteristic of Black stockings cosplay.
Communication with the photographer throughout the shoot was also crucial—such as posing direction and utilizing the broom prop as a visual anchor or subtle frame element to enrich the composition. Since Marisa in Touhou Project is inherently an energetic character, I tried to stay lively and spirited across most shots, while toning it down slightly for the indoor shots to cultivate a quieter ambiance. I love this narrative-driven style of photo set: it preserves the character's signature traits and magical essence while showcasing the aesthetic beauty of the costume coordination. Successfully recreating the character's spirit and costume details brought a genuine sense of accomplishment.
