I have been wanting to find a suitable opportunity to shoot this character again over the past few years, and I finally achieved it during this Sydney on-location photography trip. Having the chance to reinterpret Misaki Mei in 2025 means more to me personally than a simple photoshoot; it feels like looking back at that campus story full of suspense. After all, presenting that kind of aura—chilly yet serene in the silence—demands a high level of coordination from both the styling and one's state.
For the costume, this classic black suit jacket and white shirt combination was selected, paired with a wine-red bow tie and gold buttons. This color scheme particularly accentuates the silhouette in dark environments, allowing the character to immediately achieve high recognition. To restore the character's signature features, I prepared red and green heterochromia contact lenses as well as a single red lens. The state of wearing the white eyepatch in the second picture is, in my personal opinion, one of the stylings that best restores the essence of the character, as the gaze hidden beneath the eyepatch makes the person's overall aura even more mysterious. On the other hand, the setup without the eyepatch in the first picture showcases a different facial trait; I feel the visual contrast between the two is highly narrative.
Regarding the venue for this shoot, it was chosen at a night view location near downtown Sydney. The black iron mesh at night gives a rigid sense of isolation, which happens to lock into the enclosed yet unknown underlying atmosphere of the original work. The photographer coordinated a very intense red side-backlighting this time. When the light hit the edges of the black wig and suit, that sharp red-and-black contrast hit right at you, and you could even feel a slight sense of immersion akin to the scent of blood.
Many people might think portraying this type of character doesn't require much expression management, and that having an expressionless face is enough. But actually, when shooting characters with this kind of aura, the hardest part lies in restraining the gaze. Facial micro-expressions need to be minimized as much as possible, yet the gaze cannot be hollow. The blank space left by that side of the face wearing the eyepatch actually gives the audience more room for imagination, and this incomplete beauty is precisely where the character's charm lies. During the shooting process, I also continuously adjusted my postures, trying my best to use hand movements to assist in emotional expression. Crossing my arms protectively over my chest both showcases the restraint of the body and maintains a defensive sense of distance.
The post-processing mindset this time also leaned towards restraint, without doing too much skin smoothing, mainly to preserve the texture of the red light while ensuring the color balance between the skin and the black tones. The green light noise that easily appears in night views was also cleaned up quite well through processing. In my opinion, cosplay is not just a display of an outfit; it is the fusion of styling, light, shadow, emotion, and the character's core. Even when shooting the same character again after several years, completely different expressions can emerge due to changes in one's own state and understanding.
Sharing this set of pictures with everyone can be considered an image record of this character left for my 2025. These two photoshoots each have their own merits, one fully displaying the eye characteristics, and one carrying the iconic mysteriousness of the eyepatch. I hope that while looking at the images, everyone can also imagine the quiet world behind this attire. This wraps up a wonderful piece of Anime-style photography.
