When planning this Nazrin cosplay from Touhou Project, I specifically chose an outdoor park with extensive stone steps as our ACG outdoor location; the preparation required quite a bit of care. Starting with the costume, to match the character's canon setting, I coordinated a layered blue-and-white Lolita-style dress: a light blue shawl over a white long-sleeved blouse, with cuffs and hem adorned in abundant lace and ruffles. For the lower half, I wore a dark full skirt supported by multiple tiered petticoats to preserve its voluminous silhouette.
Props presented a major test. The black dowsing rod with its bent linear design had noticeable weight and was much harder to handle than expected. Additionally, holding the woven basket filled with trinkets while gripping the rod—all while maintaining an easy, carefree expression—demanded considerable arm stamina. The wig was styled as silver-gray short curls topped with fluffy gray mouse ears. The 3D tail had a slight weight that swayed naturally with movement; I initially worried it might look awkward over the petticoat, but against the dark skirt it stood out with prominent charm, perfectly capturing the mouse's nimble, clever spirit.
The shooting process itself was a real workout for Outdoor photography. Navigating up and down the stairways repeatedly, we squeezed into bushes and balanced on park benches to capture ideal angles. The photographer maintained high compositional standards, especially with backlit frames to prevent foliage shadows across the face. The textured stone steps, lush greenery, and subtle pink blossoms together created a genuine feeling of hunting for treasure in a forest. To project clever confidence, I explored varied poses—profile glances toward the lens, or head tilted up with eyes closed in the sunlight. The photo seated on the steps cradling the basket was actually a candid capture during a rest break that caught brilliant rim light along my back.
Because the skirt was voluminous, pairing White stockings with dark leather shoes meant watching my step carefully on the stairs to avoid tripping over the hem. A minor hiccup occurred when fatigue led me to step on the rod prop, but I managed to regain balance safely. Preparing the complete hair, makeup, and prop ensemble took substantial time and effort. Compared to a studio, authentic outdoor settings make immersing into the character much easier. Recreating a beloved Touhou Project character means not just wearing the right outfit, but capturing that distinct temperament and fondness for shiny trinkets. Embracing this creative process to faithfully render every detail is where my enduring joy in cosplay lies. Reviewing the raw photos after putting down the props made every bit of fatigue completely worthwhile.
