It's reached that hair-thinning stage of preparing for entrance exams again. Spending every day in the library and self-study rooms, I'm almost marinated in books. But how could a heart that loves cosplay be defeated by the mundane daily grind? Taking advantage of a rare weekend break, I decided to take this maid outfit out from the bottom of my storage for some air, treating myself to a little role transformation to relax. Perhaps this is a true portrayal of being an 'underdog in society, but a little pride at home'—struggling in a sea of books, but once putting on this gear, the aura of the 'little pride at home' is instantly in full effect.
What I'm doing this time is a classic black-and-white maid outfit. Why call it classic? Because this outfit boasts highly sophisticated details. The row of red heart embellishments on the skirt hem adds a touch of playfulness amidst the steady black and white. The ruffled apron in the front not only elongates the body proportions but also adds a cute sense of layering. Of course, the most eye-catching part is the cat ear headpiece combined with the wine-red long ponytail, and with the bows at the collar and cuffs, every tiny detail strives to maximize the cat girl setting. I consider the finishing touch of this outfit to be the garter straps connecting the over-the-knee socks to the skirt hem; this kind of sock-ring design not only visually refines the leg lines but also adds a hint of sophistication and layering to the overall black-and-white ensemble.
Speaking of accessories, shooting for display is also a labor-intensive job. Photo 3 shows my combat form holding a blue prop gun; the contrast between this hardcore equipment and the soft, adorable maid outfit is truly interesting. Holding the prop gun in hand, one can feel a certain weight, and my hand felt a bit sore after holding it for a long time, but this actually allowed me to immerse myself better into the character's combat state. In fact, everyone sees plenty of over-the-knee socks and small leather boot pairings, and although these are everyday, classic combinations, they can still present excellent visual effects under suitable tailoring and detailed decoration. One must not only pose well in front of the lens but also pay attention to the folds of the skirt and the position of the apron, trying to keep the frame from looking cluttered.
From preparation to shooting, although it was completed in front of a simple white wall at home, sparing the physical drain of running to conventions, I still repeatedly adjusted quite a few angles to capture satisfactory full-body shots. Holding that purple card in front of me earlier was intended to create an atmosphere of being out for a daily task, while after switching to the prop gun, it immediately shifted to a hardcore side. What comforts me is that the fabric breathability and tailoring of this maid outfit are excellent; I didn't feel uncomfortable when squatting or standing to pose. Comfort is a highly important part of the experience for shooting on the go.
Many friends might be curious about why I mentioned in the post that I'm an 'entrance-exam-studying cat' and a 'combat cat.' This is probably the daily life of many 2D hobbyists—dealing with heavy academics while squeezing out time to manage their hobbies. The moment I put on the maid outfit and cat ears, it feels like entering another dimensional sanctuary, where all pressures are temporarily locked outside the door. But taking off the clothes, I return to being that ordinary examinee agonizingly memorizing major courses in the library every day. In fact, these two states are not contradictory, but a power that supports each other. When wearing this gear, I don't feel like I'm playing another character, but have discovered a version of myself that is more energetic and willing to face difficulties.
During the shooting process, to capture a natural standing posture, I tried repeatedly in front of the lens to find the most suitable focal point. Although using a mobile phone to block the face is a habit of shooting, I believe this allows the gaze to concentrate on the details of the costume and props. The red piping on the edge of the small white apron, along with the small bows on the shoulders, are all bonus points for the entire outfit. In front of the lens, I can be casual or cold; this free room for performance is also the unique charm of maid cosplay.
After shooting this set of photos, I feel quite healed. Despite the simple home background, it still conveys the agility and playfulness of a cat girl through clothes, props, and a little expressiveness. Whether it's pretending to go out to run errands with a ticket or showing coolness with a long gun, the magic of this maid outfit lies herein; it can be sweet and soft, or carry a hint of hardcore temperament. I hope this simple joy can also turn into a real visual feeling through these photos, recording my relaxed moments at this very moment.
