[Patchouli Cosplay] Quiet Moonlight in Touhou Project's Magical Library

This Patchouli costume design really tests a tailor's skill—the layered ruffle mob cap alone is stitched together from five or six fabrics of varying stiffness and transparency. To capture her intellectual yet slightly mysterious aura, I chose an ash-toned light purple for the wig's highlights and paired it with thin metal-framed glasses, keeping the makeup from looking too heavy while creating a scholarly, refined aesthetic. The teal ribbon and rhinestone ornament at the neck serve as the visual highlight of the entire outfit, perfectly balancing out the heavy feeling of the long purple skirt.

When shooting this set, I deliberately chose a darker environment so the custom crescent moon lamp in my hands could serve as a lovely light accent. Built with warm LED strips inside and treated with a translucent faux-wax texture on the outside, the light it casts when held nicely fills the face, making my gaze look softer and more focused. In the first photo, I opted for a seated pose, slightly pulling up my skirt to visually expose the white thigh-highs outfit curves while naturally blocking background glare to strengthen the main subject.

For characters in the Touhou Project series, props are often the soul of the look. Beyond the moon lamp, the cover of that thick magic book was specially commissioned from an artist, featuring purple daisy and green foliage motifs with aged, yellowed page edges, giving it real weight in hand. During the second photo, the photographer suggested turning my body slightly, cradling the book in one hand while holding up the glowing moon with the other. Using a wide aperture blurred the venue lights into colorful bokeh spots, creating an immersive feeling of being in a late-night library somewhere in Gensokyo.

When handling a cosplay with such rich elements, daily posture management is truly essential. Because the costume itself is packed with ruffles and lace, poor posture can easily make one look bulky on camera. So before shooting, I stretched my shoulders and neck in advance to ensure my collarbones and shoulder lines were defined in half-body shots. Though putting on and taking off this outfit is a hassle, seeing the light and shadow folds and the flowing purple sleeves frozen in the final shots made all the prep work feel totally worth it.

Special thanks to photographer @三月的半 for these photos; his experience in guiding poses and capturing dynamic moments was invaluable. For instance, while holding the book, instead of having me sit rigidly, he had me cross my legs on a high stool and lean forward slightly, evoking the feeling of flipping through an ancient tome. The side-backlight coming from a low angle captured the semi-translucent texture of the gauze fabric beautifully while adding dimension to facial features. Exchanging ideas about lighting and composition during breaks was one of my favorite parts of this convention photography process.

Most people looking at the final photos might just think the outfit or person looks nice, but to me, every satisfying picture involves wig adjustments, repositioning makeup highlights and shadows, checking prop battery levels, and numerous other tedious details. I'm a bit of a perfectionist cosplayer: no fingerprints or dust on the glasses, stray hair edges secured with bobby pins in advance, and no snags on the white thigh-highs outfit. Confirming every detail before shooting allows me to pour my full energy into eye contact and emotional expression with the camera.

Cosplaying Patchouli was a truly wonderful experience. Gorgeous purple Lolita fashion is completely different from casual everyday clothes; wearing it makes you feel like you truly possess magical powers. Through these captured frames, I hope to convey her composed, reserved, yet immensely powerful magic-casting aura. No matter how many characters I cosplay in the future, maintaining a professional attitude and passion for cosplay, and striving to recreate the character in my heart, will always remain the driving force behind my photoshoots.
