Cosplaying Perlica at Anime Expo today—the scorching weather truly almost made me faint from the heat. This outfit from Arknights: Endfield is visually stunning, but under direct sunlight well over thirty degrees Celsius, wearing it felt like being a walking thermos.

Let's talk about the thought process behind this ensemble first. Perlica's character design is remarkably distinctive, embodying a style that blends cool detachment with futuristic sci-fi flair. To replicate the texture of the original concept art, I chose a rather thick fabric with a substantial drape for the white oversized outerwear. While the voluminous puff sleeves add a commanding presence to the silhouette, standing under the blazing sun made my arms feel completely bundled inside a down comforter. The white sleeveless mock-neck top underneath fits very snugly; paired with the black choker featuring red and blue hanging tags, it looks exceptionally cool on camera, but in reality, my neck was sealed airtight without a breath of breeze getting through. The light blue slender belt at the waist was cinched tightly over the light blue pleated skirt; while this tailored waistline undeniably accentuates bodily proportions, it severely restricted my mobility to the point where even taking deep breaths required cautious restraint.

For the lower half, I styled it with Black stockings, marking my very first time attempting this pairing in such sweltering heat. Wearing Black stockings outdoors in the summer is no small feat—not only is it stifling and unbreathable, but walking just a few paces makes the legs sweat and feel sticky, all while having to constantly guard against snags during photos. The asymmetrical brown and ochre gloves on my hands are a major visual highlight of the overall look, yet their textile is equally dense; wearing them for an extended period left my palms drenched in sweat, demanding extreme delicacy whenever holding props or touching up makeup.

As for the wig, this pale blonde long straight style with blunt bangs and distinctly sculpted flicked hair strands at the crown offers powerful styling presence, yet a gust of outdoor wind easily disrupts it, requiring non-stop grooming. Anyone who has worn a wig knows that braving summer heat with a heavy wig and full-coverage makeup makes forehead sweat pour down like a waterfall. Although my expression looks poised and composed in the photos, my mind was spinning right after wrapping these two shots, with the scenery trembling before my eyes. We were shooting in the open plaza outside the convention center, surrounded by fellow convention-goers milling about in light summer wear, making my heavily layered attire stand out in stark contrast.

This shoot was truly saved by carrying ample ice water and portable mini fans; otherwise, I might have suffered heatstroke by the roadside. Portraying a character with such an intricate design always turns into a major endurance trial. While Perlica radiates a cool, composed aura in the final frames that perfectly matches the character's persona, my mind in reality was entirely fixated on stripping off this costume and retreating to an air-conditioned room. That being said, every time I see photos with such high character fidelity, every drop of sweat feels completely worthwhile. Challenging oneself under brutal heat to bring out the character's absolute best is probably why Cosplay photography is such a love-hate journey. For everyone doing outdoor shoots in summer, never neglect heatstroke prevention—cooling sheets and electrolyte remedies are true lifesavers, and remember to hydrate frequently during breaks, because taking care of your body is the real foundation for continuing to cosplay.
