[Gardener cosplay] Identity V Emma Woods' Steampunk Tea Party

Bringing this steampunk-style maid outfit to life at the CICF convention took considerable thought regarding pattern tailoring and fabric selection.

The overall costume adopts a black-and-gold palette. For the black sections, I selected velvet fabric woven with subtle jacquard patterns, which casts a delicate, soft sheen under the complex venue lighting, offering far greater texture and depth than standard plain weaves. The glossy white apron and tiered lace ruffles catch highlights easily, so we consciously avoided direct, harsh lighting on-site to keep the specular shine from blowing out the fine fabric details. The brown corset at the waist serves as the visual centerpiece of the ensemble; its golden crisscross braided lacing is strikingly eye-catching, though maintaining that cinched waistline definitely felt restrictive—a necessary rite of passage when cosplaying such ornate silhouettes.

For hair and makeup, to faithfully embody the character's traits, the wig was trimmed with blunt bangs and layered face-framing sideburns, finishing with soft inward-curling ends. The eye makeup was paired with bright blue contact lenses and slightly winged eyeliner, accented by subtle fake fangs to accentuate her playful personality. Considering the high indoor temperatures and heavy crowds at the convention hall, I chose long-wearing foundation products and kept compact powder on hand to blot away oil and touch up constantly.

In terms of props, beyond the classic feather duster reinforcing the maid motif, I also integrated small high-tech sci-fi gadgets. Taking advantage of high-angle wide shots on-site placed the subject right in the center while utilizing perspective distortion to elongate leg lines, with the Black and white striped stockings providing a visually flattering, slimming effect.

At an exhibition as bustling and packed as CICF, getting cinematic shots relies heavily on working with the surrounding environment. A wide-aperture lens is essential to melt away the cluttered backdrop and passing crowds. Warm-toned neon light tubes along the edges of exhibition booths served as wonderful rim lights, outlining silhouettes and enhancing three-dimensional separation. This steampunk maid ensemble balances heavy mechanical aesthetics with maid-like lightness. While wearing it was intricate and physically demanding, seeing the delicate golden threads and ruffled lace textures captured so beautifully on screen made all the exhaustion vanish immediately. Polishing every detail of costume and props is always about presenting the character in their truest essence at the convention.
