Taking advantage of the cloudy day by the sea, I recreated Plana's classic sailor suit outfit and recorded some little thoughts during the shooting process. Since the character's original temperament is relatively calm and serene, I specifically chose a seaside scene, hoping to use the waves and the grayish-white background to capture a cool but soft texture.
Let's first talk about the outfit combination. In Plana's classic design, the black-and-white sailor top and black pleated skirt have the highest recognition and serve as an excellent basic look that easily yields great results during outdoor shoots. To prevent the black from looking too dull, the white ribbon at the collar is a stroke of genius, echoing the white collar trim of the top to create a very clean visual effect. For the lower half, I chose to pair it with matte black tights and black thick-soled loafers. This ensures that even against a slightly complex background like the beach, the integrity of the character's lines is perfectly maintained. In the first full-body photo, the hem and skirt flutter naturally in the sea breeze, preventing the frame from looking too stiff.
Regarding props, the pink halo and white hair ornaments on my head are the soul accessories of this shoot. Especially that white bow decoration—it needs to be securely fastened with small hairpins when worn, as the sea breeze can be quite strong during outdoor shoots, and it can easily be blown crooked if not secured tightly. As seen in the sitting postures in the third and fourth photos, I deliberately brought a black long-handled umbrella as a matching prop. On a cloudy seaside day, a pure black umbrella not only echoes the colors of the sailor suit outfit but also adds a sense of storytelling to the overall persona when held in hand, saving my hands from looking awkward or unsure of how to pose.
Another detail is the drawing mentioned in the post. During the shoot, I carried a lined notebook with me and casually sketched a stick-figure character wearing a round helmet and spreading its arms. This design inspiration was meant to echo some of the daily interactions in the game, adding a little narrative cleverness to this set of photos. In the second close-up, I held the notebook in front of me to block half of my face, letting my gaze peek out slightly. This hides the facial expression to add a touch of mystery while naturally guiding attention to the stick-figure drawing, making for a relatively relaxed interactive shot.
Let's also talk about the live environment. A cloudy day is truly a wonderful natural softbox for this kind of seaside location shoot. Without intense direct sunlight, the shadows on the face become exceptionally soft, and the texture of the skin can be beautifully preserved. The challenge lies in the application of large-aperture lenses and communication with the photographer; after all, the grayish-blue tone of the seaside background is relatively monotonous, so it relies on the subject's body language to enrich the frame. For instance, in the posture chosen for the fourth photo—sitting on the wooden classroom desks and chairs—I slightly bent and crossed my legs while propping my elbows on my knees to rest my chin in my hands. This sitting position wonderfully displays the leg lines and the texture of the black tights while making my whole form look highly relaxed, completely free of any forced posing feel. The wood-colored chair forms a certain color contrast with the light-colored sand in the foreground, and the centered composition of the character helps concentrate the focus.
When performing post-processing on this set of photos, I intentionally retained that low-saturation blue, white, and gray palette instead of going for intense color contrasts. Because the character Plana herself carries a sense of quiet and cleanliness akin to a blank sheet of paper, overly vibrant colors would instead ruin the overall atmosphere. The facial makeup was also kept as clean as possible, with cool-toned eyeshadow and red lips providing accents to ensure the character remains spirited even in the cool-toned frames of a cloudy day. Going on an outdoor shoot is a process full of both exhaustion and joy—from securing the wig and adjusting the skirt hem to finding angles to dodge the invasion of waves, it requires a great deal of thought. Fortunately, the final output results are highly satisfying, and these frames everyone sees are the exact moments of Plana I left behind by the sea through this cosplay photography session.
