Officially standing in the exhibition hall of the Hangzhou China International Cartoon and Animation Festival and lifting this golden retro microphone-shaped staff, I naturally immerse myself into Astra Yao's state from Zenless Zone Zero. Preparing this piece of work took a lot of energy, especially the red fabric of the jacket which was chosen to be a satin-like material, offering a great reflective effect under the exhibition hall's bright fill light. Paired with the white waist-cinching corset and layered translucent skirt hem, the visual sense of hierarchy opens up beautifully.
The staff part of the prop utilized metallic paint spraying and splicing craftsmanship; you can feel its solid weight the moment you hold it. This is also the most recognizable weapon in this styling. The movements of single-handed supporting and lifting required repeatedly adjusting the leverage points to prevent the frame from breaking character. To coordinate with the character's iconic long hair, the wig was pre-treated for smoothness, forming a natural flowing curve when the wind blows or when looking back. The lighting at the exhibition venue was quite chaotic, but the photographer set up two side-backlights on-site, beautifully outlining the shoulder lines and the edge contours of the hair, making it ideal for a professional Cosplay photography session.
As a character centered around a stage presence, Astra Yao possesses distinctive personality colors. Therefore, when facing the camera, besides restoring the details of the clothes and props, I cared more about grasping that calm and confident demeanor. The focus direction of the gaze and the extension of the hand movements need to coordinate, presenting a momentary feel of performing or preparing to sing. On-site at the festival for my Chinese Anime Independent Tour, walking around different exhibition areas in this red and white outfit definitely garnered a lot of attention.
The entire shooting process was quite a challenge for both physical strength and expression management. However, seeing that tiny accessories like the rivets and metal rings on the clothes are clearly visible in the final photos, and the lines of the standing posture are quite upright, makes me feel that all those poses practiced in front of the mirror were worth it. This texture belonging to a New Eridu singer truly needs to be fully released within the offline convention's light and shadow for this Cosplay photography experience.
