Cosplaying Sunna from Zenless Zone Zero at the October 5 CQ Anime convention took considerable prep time, from wardrobe to props. The wig features mint-green twintails; to preserve airy bounce, I used generous amounts of setting spray and re-permed the curls at the ends. Turquoise contact lenses were chosen, with eye makeup emphasizing pink tones across eyeshadow and blush to stay faithful to her clever, adorable vibe. The star and angel graphics on the necktie were custom-made, while the polka-dot bow at the waist and the little white wing props on my back were adjusted several times to sit naturally on the expo floor.
The convention saw heavy foot traffic on the day. With numerous accessories, wearing that oversized pink backpack alongside the wings made navigating through the crowds rather tricky—I even nearly got stuck passing through the turnstiles. However, I met many wonderful Zenless Zone Zero fans who were incredibly friendly and cooperative during greetings and group photos. Midday, I grabbed some snacks to refuel before returning to the hall floor for more shots. Ambient venue lighting was messy, with intense top-down illumination in certain areas, forcing us to find angles that dodged dark shadows, or rely on post-processing color grading for cohesion.
To capture satisfying images, I cycled through diverse poses. The pink-and-white striped arm sleeves are one of the highlights of this outfit, requiring mindful posing to ensure my arms didn't obscure the graphics on the necktie while remaining relaxed and fluid. On the bottom half, white thigh-high socks were layered with pink-and-white striped slouch socks, creating rich visual depth around the shoes and socks. Though this pairing flattered leg lines, my soles ached after prolonged walking. The photographer harnessed oblique side light on location to accentuate the pleats of the skirt and leg contours, resulting in frames with wonderful tactile presence. Reviewing the shots, several angles stood out brilliantly—especially the over-the-shoulder glance, which framed the wings on my back and the layered sock details along my legs to perfection.
Ultimately, the greatest joy of cosplay is breathing life into beloved characters in the real world and connecting with fellow enthusiasts. I picked up so much at this expo, such as better wig care techniques and sturdier mounting methods for wing props, alongside lively discussions on tailoring hurdles for other Zenless Zone Zero characters. Looking back, despite the intense physical exhaustion and aching feet from standing all day in platform soles, seeing Sunna's playful energy captured flawlessly made every ounce of preparation worthwhile. I definitely plan to attend the next edition, hoping to showcase an even more polished look and looking forward to meeting more friends then.
