Wearing this orange kimono and striking the "Take my punch!" pose on-site at CPGZ07 (Comicup Guangzhou 07) is definitely one of my favorite looks among my recent Convention photos. Ever since I received this costume, I wanted to capture that crisp, dashing feel under the industrial-style ceiling of the convention hall, and seeing the raw shots from photographer Huaiyi, the effect was indeed even sleeker than expected.
First, let's talk about the details of this outfit. The overall fabric is a cotton-linen blend with a subtle patterned texture rather than smooth cloth. This texture displays a very natural matte luster when caught by the camera lens without appearing cheap or overly reflective. The orange hue was adjusted multiple times to be softer than standard orange-red, and when paired with small red flower accents, it visually blends traditional kimono grace with the character's signature crispness. Tying this Obi sash took quite a bit of effort during dressing. The bottom layer—a wide deep blue/indigo-purple sash—was key to fixing the silhouette; on top was a bright green horizontal cloth sash to cinch it, and finally tied in the center was the red tassel cord. This three-color layering significantly elevated the three-dimensionality of the silhouette: deep blue-purple added stability, bright green popped, and the red cord served as a finishing touch. This color-blocking treatment ensured that chaotic convention lights hitting the outfit didn't look messy. The neckline deliberately preserved the deep blue inner lining edge, which was also a crucial detail in framing face and neck lines elegantly.
For makeup and hair, a clean and lightweight foundation was deliberately used, placing the main focus on eye contouring. The hair was deep brown, tied into her signature loose high ponytail. Two long wisps of hair were left at the sideburns to frame the face, paired with light bangs. This seemingly casual hairstyle actually tested craft skills heavily when securing it—ensuring stray strands wouldn't block sight during dynamic poses while maintaining that "stubborn yet gentle" anime vibe in our Cosplay photography session.
While posing for "Take my punch!", I grasped the essence of this posture. The fist couldn't be clenched too tightly or solidly, but rather needed a relaxed sense of force, with elbows opening outward naturally. Shoulders had to sink down while the chest opened slightly so that eyes could meet the camera with sufficient confidence. Those shots in image five stepping on a black suitcase were actually to borrow leverage during the shoot. Convention hall floors were hard, and standing straight made legs get swallowed by the kimono hem, looking constrained; stepping onto the suitcase shifted body weight and created a center-of-gravity elevation difference, naturally elongating lower body lines while natural skirt folds formed great shading under exposure. Moving through the large venue during shooting with neatly arranged white ceiling lights overhead, the photographer used a wide-aperture lens to turn those light fixtures into luminous background bokeh, complemented by a subtle red halo effect around the edges in post-processing, instantly bringing out battle intensity and speed.
Although people came and went in the venue, the photographer's focus locking during quick captures stayed extremely stable. Under that high-contrast lighting, character outlines were exceptionally sharp. This styling truly let me feel that "woman among women" vibe—possessing both sweet gentleness and the decisive boldness to punch someone. Cosplay itself is a journey of approaching a character's soul through costume and demeanor, and I hope this photo set delivers the core spirit of Shimura Tae from Gintama.
