[Sakuya Izayoi cosplay] Head Maid in Touhou Project: Another Perspective on Convention Photos

This shoot was completed on-site at the Mianyang cosplay convention. Although the venue conditions were actually quite limited, the returned results of this photoset were truly surprising. Convention photos are often jokingly referred to as survival-style shoots where being able to see one's face clearly is already good enough, but we clearly didn't want to stay at a basic level. The photographer and retoucher managed to carve out narrative combat scenes for us within the limited space of the booth.

This time I cosplayed Sakuya Izayoi in a full blue-and-white maid dress. Details are exceptionally rich—from off-the-shoulder cuts on the top, ruffles at the cuffs, and a white collar at the neckline, to complex multi-layered pleats and lace stitching on the skirt hem. To keep this slightly sweet dress from appearing one-dimensional, I intentionally sharpened my facial expression during shooting. The silver-blonde twintail wig paired with the iconic white ruffled headpiece added visual weight to the character.

Regarding props, I specifically prepped several flying knives with magical cool-toned paintwork. Presenting the character's combat tension in flat photos relies entirely on these physical props supporting postures. Early action designs mainly revolved around controlling clocks and throwing knives—such as holding chains, wielding knives with crossed hands, or simulating the moment knives slip from grip. Practicing many related movements beforehand kept poses from looking stiff during shooting.

I particularly want to highlight the retoucher's work, which matched the character's traits perfectly. Incorporating massive gears and clock dial elements into the background, paired with eerie blue energy flames and blade motion blur effects, instantly transformed the ordinary convention floor into a mechanism-filled space-time battlefield. Floating knives and light effects in the air echoed my actions, materializing the concept of time control. The photographer was very professional with lighting, where cool-toned light complemented the blue dress while keeping skin texture authentic and detailed.

Cosplaying such a classic veteran character, I feel the true difficulty lies in making expressions and body language align with the persona. You need to understand her elegant yet decisive nature. Therefore, when posing, your gaze must be sharp enough—even if I'm the only one in frame, I must imagine an opponent in combat right before me. From standing poses and kneeling down to stretch the skirt hem, to side turns with crossed knives, I attempted various dynamic poses to showcase crisp coolness in battle.

The black tights and Mary Jane shoes of this Black tights outfit serve as crucial visual anchors. Under a puffy skirt hem, semi-sheer black tights elongate leg proportions while adding a touch of sleek capability belonging to the character. We specifically picked angles showing skirt layering and leg lines; whether from a high-angle overhead shot or close-up portrait, the presented effect turned out harmonious.

Although the entire shoot was constrained by convention crowds and lighting interference, joint efforts from the photographer and retoucher elevated the completeness of these Convention photos. It didn't waste the hard work of organizing props and adjusting the wig the night before. Compared to refined studio photography, these photos from the convention floor carry a stronger sense of presence, with atmosphere building spot-on and character temperament fully captured—making it a very satisfying creative experience.
