[Kiana cosplay] Honkai Impact 3rd Ba-Dum! Fiery Wishing Star: Welcoming the New Year with Vibrant Red

When slipping into the "Ba-Dum! Fiery Wishing Star" costume, the first thing that popped into my mind was this vibrant, festive atmosphere. The red and black dominant palette paired with large areas of white and gold fits the festive, warm feeling of a traditional Chinese New Year perfectly. To match this theme, I specifically chose carved mahogany doors and windows as the background, adding red lanterns, Chinese knots, and spring couplets to make the New Year atmosphere in this photoset deeply resonant.

Regarding costume texture, this look features many intriguing details. The black-and-white ink-wash gradient pattern on the chest is not only the visual focal point, but when combined with metallic buckles and accessories, elevates the overall refinement. The flowing ribbon design adds agility to the frame, while sleeve straps and asymmetrical cuts give this outfit a touch of combat and lively energy on top of traditional Chinese style. In particular, the white wig paired with a red bow on top stands out strikingly against the red backdrop, giving the character high recognizability. The skirt adopts an airy layered design, showcasing wonderful dynamic beauty when walking.

In terms of props, the candied hawthorns can be called the finishing touch. When shooting the close-up in Figure 1, I deliberately extended two sticks of candied hawthorns toward the lens as far as possible. Utilizing the exaggerated perspective of a wide-angle lens along with a shallow depth of field created a strong sense of spatial depth between foreground and background. This highly interactive framing easily draws viewers' eyes, offering a high success rate for great photos. Switching to the long-handled catalyst prop in Figure 2 completely changed my aura—shifting from playful and lively to valiant and heroic—where the prop swap brought a totally different emotional expression. The vivid red of the candied hawthorns resonated nicely with the red of the outfit, keeping the image unified yet rich in detail.

As for hair and makeup, to present the character's clear yet ethereal temperament, I applied a very clean base makeup, placing focus on eye radiance. Blue-grey contact lenses and sharper eyeliner nicely outlined a keen gaze. For lip color, I chose a natural berry red—not overly attention-grabbing, yet echoing the overall red tone of the costume for harmonious makeup. Under ample lighting, this combination presents a cool yet vibrant feel. Wig styling was also meticulous; white wigs easily show frizz, so before shooting, I carefully combed the hair flow to ensure both the ahoge on top and the bow stayed standing firmly.

Lighting setup and scene selection were also key to the success of this photoset. Indoor ambient light was rather complex, so we specially used warm-toned fill lights to simulate the feel of natural indoor sunlight. Red-and-gold floral decorations on the left, red gift boxes printed with blessings on the right, along with the cascading drape of sheer curtains behind, all added layers to the frame. During shooting, I focused on leaning forward or turning sideways slightly to avoid stiff standing poses, letting every ribbon move and capturing moments when the breeze rustled hair strands, resulting in much more vivid and natural photos.

In fact, capturing high-texture photos lies not just in gorgeous costumes, but in overall set coordination. The Chinese wooden window frames and red ornaments in this set created rich light-and-shadow contrast under illumination, adding a strong narrative feel to the photos. During framing, we deliberately avoided modern-looking objects, utilizing a wide aperture to blur the background as much as possible so visual focus remained on the main subject. Throughout shooting, I also tried many different angles, such as shooting down from high angles or lowering the camera for low-angle perspectives, displaying diverse personality facets of the character.

Of course, cosplay isn't merely putting on clothes, but bringing the character's feel into specific situations. In this intensely red-atmosphere setting, I strove to embody a vibrant, blessing-filled state during the New Year, hoping to pass on this festive and vital visual experience. From costume details to overall visual presentation, I feel satisfied with the completion degree of this photoset, making it a great attempt at a New Year themed cosplay with Chinese-style cosplay flair. Every time I try a new style, it deepens my understanding of cosplay expression—which is probably the greatest reward of persisting in what I love.
