The inspiration for shooting the character Ruan Mei this time stemmed from that moment of lowering her eyes by the water and playing with ink and brush. As a character filled with a classical and serene atmosphere in Honkai: Star Rail, Ruan Mei features rich Traditional Chinese style elements. Shooting a set of works with a scholarly air has always been a challenge I really wanted to try. The texture of the costume is far more complex than it appears in photos. The overall color scheme is primarily lake blue and moon white, supplemented by golden borders and subtle patterns. Especially the three-dimensional plum blossom decorations on the shoulders and waist are meticulously crafted. To match the character's setting, I specially chose hair accessories with teal highlights and a pair of dark long leather gloves.
The props prepared this time were also a major focus, such as the round fan in my hand, as well as the abacus, ink brush, and Xuan paper on the desk. To recreate Ruan Mei's lifestyle of playing chess and writing in a quiet room year-round, the set design team specifically used wooden grid screens, antique lanterns, flowing gauze curtains, and a few sprigs of red plum blossoms to create a quaint and tranquil space. The waterside scenery in the picture is also very interesting; the thin mist produced by dry ice, combined with the reflections on the water's surface, indeed brought a powerful sense of immersion.
During the shoot, because the costume is relatively form-fitting and constrained by the long gloves, the hand movements required extra care. We spent a considerable amount of effort adjusting subtle movements, such as the curvature of the wrist when holding the brush, and the distribution of body weight when leaning against the desk, striving to present a sense of effortless relaxation. Although the high-definition lens of the studio shoot can capture a lot of details, I actually prefer the sets of photos featuring artificial scenery and live light effects. The hazy atmosphere of light and shadow filtering through the gauze curtains onto the body makes the character's narrative feel more three-dimensional. For characters in Honkai: Star Rail, I feel that recreating her appearance through excellent makeup and styling is only the beginning. How to convey her cool detachment and intellect through simple movements and expressions is the most fulfilling part of the cosplay process. This set of work can be said to be the one I have invested the most energy into recently, and it has also given me a deeper understanding of lens control.
