[Ruan Mei Cosplay] Immersing in the Chinese Aesthetics and Classical Mood of Honkai: Star Rail

Aside from her cool exterior, I wanted even more to capture that restrained sense of composure. For this Honkai: Star Rail Ruan Mei cosplay photoshoot, from the initial makeup test to the studio shoot, it took over half a month of preparation. Today, I can finally present this set of photos.

The main color scheme of this outfit consists of clear blue-green and pure white, accented with gold trim and light peach pink. To recreate the character's elegant temperament filled with the spiritual aura of a water town, not a single detail of the costume was overlooked. From the semi-transparent off-the-shoulder design to the deep blue long gloves on the hands, as well as the gemstone neck ornament, paired with the 3D pink flowers at the waist and the strap elements on the legs, the overall look possesses both traditional Chinese charm and a touch of modern design beauty. To match the character's hair color, I added a large area of blue-green gradient highlights to my short black hair, styling it in a simple updo secured with a side hair accessory, making the overall head silhouette look sharper.

Regarding the choice of props, we made ample preparations this time: a round fan painted with plum blossom patterns, a finely crafted yueqin (moon lute) adorned with pink floral decorations, a white oil-paper umbrella, and a scroll of bamboo slips. These props were not just ornaments; they were a huge help during the shoot. Whenever I didn't know where to put my hands, holding the round fan or plucking the neck of the instrument naturally brought out the character's body language. Especially for those shots where I laid on my side on the wooden daybed holding the yueqin—although it required conscious core engagement to keep the pose looking lazy rather than sloppy—the final photos were absolutely worth the effort.

The set design for this shoot was highly sophisticated. The studio specifically constructed a set of traditional Chinese doors and windows, alongside which sat white porcelain tea sets, landscape hanging scrolls, blue-and-white porcelain vases, woven bamboo baskets, and even a stylized white crane sculpture to add depth to the frame. The highly reflective material of the floor made the entire scene look incredibly clear and translucent. Paired with draping white flower bouquets on both sides and warm yellow wooden lanterns, it created a serene and elegant atmosphere. The photographer, Ah King, is highly experienced in handling light; he used bright studio softboxes to illuminate the costume details while preserving the warm light of the lanterns as accents, letting the warm and cool colors of the photos complement each other.

The shooting process was actually much more tiring than imagined. Because most of the poses required sitting or half-lying on the wooden daybed, to avoid being exposed by the floor's reflection while keeping the lines of my thighs and legs looking beautiful, I wore high heels throughout the entire process. Striking elegant poses often requires high tension in the core muscles; after finishing three or four sets of poses, my back and waist were indeed a bit sore. However, putting on this outfit brings a sense of responsibility to do my best in interpreting Ruan Mei's deep, still-water-runs-deep aura.

I am quite satisfied with the overall makeup, hair, and styling this time. The makeup did not take a heavy Ancient style photography route; instead, it emphasized the liveliness of the eye makeup and the gentleness of the lip color, paired with a cool white skin tone to make the overall facial look as clean and approachable as possible. Set against the scenery and props, the carved details of the yueqin and the glossy texture of the fabric worked together to restore the atmosphere of the Honkai: Star Rail character at every turn. This style, which combines Chinese-style cosplay and fantasy elements, is incredibly photogenic on camera.

Special thanks to Mr. Ah King for his patient guidance and sharp capturing during the shoot. Through this Ruan Mei cosplay photoshoot, I saw the character's core of being independent of the secular world. I hope everyone enjoys this scroll of Eastern aesthetics constructed under the flowing light and shadow. This memory of the fusion of classical style and fantasy will become a very unique experience in my cosplay journey.
