[Ruan Mei Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail's Serene Chinese-Style Cosplay Look

Preparing to cos Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail took just over a week from receiving the costume to the official shoot. When the garment arrived, what impressed me most was the rich fabric texture blending peacock blue and navy, complemented by sweeping white streamers and golden filigree piping—creating an exceptionally refined and serene feel. In particular, the off-the-shoulder ruffled design, the thigh ring, and the high-slit skirt were quite demanding on physique, as any bit of extra flesh would be squeezed out. To ensure great photos, I adjusted my diet prior to cosplaying, hoping to stay as faithful as possible to the character's slender build.

The wig was another focal point of this shoot. Ruan Mei's hair is a layered black short style featuring two symmetrical buns on top. To secure these twin buns, I stuffed a lot of wire and support structure inside the wig cap, which felt quite heavy, but fortunately a Cosplayer's skull is tough enough to take it. The teal butterfly hair ornaments attached to the buns were delicately crafted, pairing effortlessly with the outfit's color scheme. For makeup, I emphasized eye contours using very light blue-gray contact lenses along with subtle orange-red eyeshadow smudging, aiming to recreate that clear, detached, and slightly aloof gaze. However, in practice, capturing that exact nuance in the eyes remained tricky to pin down with precision.

Props were genuinely a grueling ordeal for me. In the first picture, that gorgeous yueqin (or ruan-like instrument) was exceptionally heavy, adorned with gold-and-blue metallic lacquer and 3D carvings. Holding it in my arms required immense care with hand posture to avoid scratching the lacquer finish while maintaining a composed and dignified holding pose. In the second picture, switching to a small round fan with delicate green tassels on the handle was vastly easier than holding the heavy instrument, liberating my body and allowing me to try more graceful, extended poses.

What drove me most crazy during the shoot was facial expression management. As I mentioned in previous posts, apologies for stiffness and being OOC. That cold, aloof, and detached temperament isn't a simple poker face, but rather a subtle micro-expression of \"everything is irrelevant to me.\" I couldn't smile at the camera at all, yet relaxing my facial muscles slightly caused my expression to look silly. Coupled with being barefoot throughout on silver reflective plastic sheeting and artificial lotus props, the soles of my feet were freezing and slippery. Standing on one leg in picture two required bracing my core strength with all my might to stay steady while keeping my face from contorting due to exertion—that single pose alone took nearly twenty minutes of retakes.

Thanks to the photographer's mastery of light, indoor lighting utilized soft cold tones paired with wooden hollowed folding screens and bamboo set decoration behind me. This rendered my skin tone brilliantly translucent and brought out clear light-and-shadow gradations in the garment's blue hues. White streamers are notoriously hard to photograph, but fortunately the photographer used a fast shutter speed to freeze the moment they swung, instilling dynamic energy into the frame. During post-production editing, I requested not to over-grade the colors to retain this serene, realistic texture, merely brightening skin tones on the soles of my feet slightly and fixing light reflections from the reflectors. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the final result.

Though the long skirt trailed heavily and walking barefoot on the reflective plastic sheeting made it easy to slip, being barefoot actually helped me enter character, allowing me to better feel that detached Chinese-style cosplay charm. The greatest joy in Cosplay lies in touching upon and understanding a familiar Xianzhou character through various details; even if the final expressions don't achieve 100% fidelity, the reflection and effort poured into the process are immensely valuable. I hope to shoot more exquisite Ancient style photoshoot works like this in the future.
