[Ruan Mei cosplay] Elegant Melodies Under Honkai: Star Rail

Recreating the costume of Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail actually involved way more details to handle than imagined. After getting this cosplay outfit, the first thing that caught my attention was the main color scheme—this blue and white color-blocking infused with classical Chinese elegance, along with the pink flower decorations embellishing the dress.

The tailoring of the top fits the body shape quite well, and the flower embroidery decoration at the waist and abdomen is extremely exquisite; I needed to carefully adjust its position during the fitting to ensure the flower pattern aligned perfectly with the waistline. The pairing with a pearl necklace is just right, neutralizing the blank space left by the off-the-shoulder design. Meanwhile, the long blue streamers at the hem are the very soul of this look, providing an excellent sense of visual extension whether standing or sitting.

This time, I specially prepared a highly accurate moon qin prop. Its blue baked paint finish and golden patterned edges look gorgeous under the light, and the pink flower branches attached to the neck also successfully recreate the character's elements. The prop has a moderate weight; holding it makes me unconsciously straighten my posture, as if truly creating an atmosphere of playing an instrument and making music. The deep blue long gloves worn on both hands are indeed quite tight, slightly restricting the mobility of my fingers in particular, but once I got used to it, it actually helped me better manage the placement angle of the instrument.

For the hairstyle, bun decorations were used on both sides, paired with naturally flowing black hair, striving to find a balance between softness and sharpness. In terms of the game character makeup, to match the character's temperament, I minimized the color intensity of the eyeshadow as much as possible, focusing instead on the definition of the eyeliner and eyebrows. The lip color chosen was a natural nude pink, steering the entire look toward a cool and soft style rather than using an overly heavy approach.

The shoot this time was conducted indoors, primarily utilizing natural light without relying much on external flash units. Since the material of the costume itself carries a certain glossiness, soft light can better restore the original colors of the clothes, avoiding overexposure from reflections that could lead to a loss of detail. The mirror environment provided a great preview angle for taking selfies, allowing me to continuously adjust subtle movements of my hands and body based on the posture reflected in the mirror. I shot a set of both standing and sitting poses. When sitting, crossing my legs visually elongated the leg proportions, which, paired with high heels, made my overall stature appear more upright and elegant.

Preparing these props and costumes took about two weeks to fine-tune the details, including the hem stitching of the streamers and the fit of the gloves. The joy of cosplay lies heavily in recreating entities from the original work. Being able to wear this outfit, hold the props, and record these moments is inherently a highly fulfilling experience.

This kind of styling with distinct Chinese-style ACG elements truly carries a great texture under the lens. Although coordinating the hair accessories and props can be quite tedious, the final results turned out excellently. Capturing expressions from a mirror-view perspective is a great way to document it.
