Shooting this set for Ruan Mei involved pre-production preparations heavily concentrated on the costume and key props. The outfit features a classic pairing of lake blue and pure white constructed across multiple layers—lightweight sheer tulle on the outside and rich satin underneath—which required meticulous arranging and securing layer by layer to preserve graceful drape and a sleek fit before the lens. The most striking features were the golden frog fasteners on the chest and the brown geometric patterns along the waist, which caught studio lighting to cast brilliant highlights that instantly elevated the garment's texture.

The ruan lute was the foundational prop of this shoot. To remain faithful to the character, the custom blue coating and golden carved accents were tailored specifically for this project. The lute carries noticeable weight; whether holding it one-handed or cradling it in my arms, solid core engagement was vital to keep it steady and protect image clarity. Styling the wig was another formidable task: using a natural dark tea-brown base, we teased the roots in advance to achieve volume, finished with an elegant half-updo at the back. With every pose shift, an assistant helped groom the subtle curves of the ends so the hair remained neither cluttered nor unnaturally stiff.

The set design also received immense thought. We chose a Chinese-style room featuring a circular moon window, where the wooden lattice and blue-and-white porcelain vase on the left echoed each other, conjuring the tranquil serenity of a classical garden. To enrich the composition, white faux flowering branches surrounded the scene, pairing with natural light streaming from the right to boost overall luminosity while painting an organic rim-light halo around my silhouette. A white plush mat was placed across the floor so that posing barefoot or leaning softly against the set felt relaxed and unconstrained.

Regarding pose direction, Ruan Mei inherently possesses a calm, detached, and hyper-focused temperament, so I deliberately avoided dramatic limb gestures, relying instead on subtle eye lines and restrained micro-expressions to convey her inner thoughts. In one frame, one hand rests along my leg while the other holds the lute, meeting the lens with a level gaze—this restrained body language genuinely tests steady eye presence. The high-slit skirt draped organically when seated, tracing clean leg lines that paired with the black thigh band to add sharp visual depth. Managing my breathing and keeping my shoulders relaxed throughout was crucial; bodily tension instantly stiffens neck and shoulder lines.

For makeup, I followed a luminous, understated palette. The eye look used an earthy base with gentle deepening along the outer corners for subtle depth, paired with clustered individual lashes instead of dense false strips to preserve the character's airy presence. The brows were softly defined without harsh angles. To complement the cool blue-and-white tones, I opted for a matte dusty-rose lip color that brought gentle warmth without overpowering her calm demeanor.

On the day of the shoot, light shifted rapidly as we relied on natural ambient lighting, requiring us to wait for passing clouds or balance exposure with reflectors. In the seated poses, adjusting the angle of the lute was critical to ensure it never blocked costume details while displaying an unobstructed silhouette. I rehearsed the lute-cradling posture over a dozen times; tilting my arms slightly too high or low made the composition look awkward, until my arms naturally grew sore right as we unlocked the ideal angle. Foot positioning demanded equal care—pointing the arch slightly refined leg lines without appearing staged. Though the wooden floor felt chilly against bare feet, keeping the overall harmony intact made it a minor detail.

Post-processing remained faithful to the original tones without aggressive skin smoothing, preserving organic skin texture. A subtle boost in overall contrast highlighted the crisp blue-and-white palette. Exploring varied framings and balancing light and shadow allowed us to recreate the quiet, mysterious aura she carries in the game. While demanding considerable energy, seeing the final frames made every fine adjustment profoundly worthwhile.
