This fan collection is a record of a studio shoot completed recently. Regarding this look for Ruan Mei cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail, I actually delayed the post-processing for a long time after finishing the shoot. The reason was that the raw images presented a state so pure and perfect that I was worried my edits might ruin this clean, translucent quality. Faced with the raw photos, I even broke my personal record for the longest time spent editing a single image, repeatedly comparing the differences between various processing approaches.
For the choice of shooting scheme, we decided to create in a pure white studio. White background photography places very high demands on lighting, requiring precise control over the transition between highlights and shadows, which heavily tests a photographer's skills. Xuemeng's control in this area was spot-on, and the straight-out-of-camera images already possessed a three-dimensional sense of layering. During my post-processing attempts, although I thought about adding some light and shadow special effects to enrich the frame, repeated comparisons revealed that this clean, bright lighting is what best showcases the texture of the clothing fabric, the details of the embroidery, and the exquisiteness of the lace. Forcing filters or special effects would conversely obscure the original translucent premium feel, so in the end, I chose to highly restore the light and shadow texture of the white studio itself.
In terms of props, the white folding fan is the absolute visual center of this look. This Fan prop features very fine, hollowed-out textures that appear lightweight and exquisite under the reflection of the studio's highlights. Paired with the long gloves on my hands and the three-dimensional flower decorations at the cuffs, it indeed visually elongates the overall lines and adds a certain level of gorgeousness. During the process of using the folding fan, I also made many attempts on how to handle the extension, ensuring that the fan wouldn't become a burden in my hands but would naturally feel like an extension of my body.
Regarding the makeup and hair this time, to adapt to the high-brightness studio environment, I made special fine-tuning to the light and dark layers of the base and eye makeup, ensuring that a three-dimensional bone structure could still be presented under strong light. The wig was trimmed to have a sense of depth, and the combination of the bangs and the hair strands on both sides retained the original feel of the styling without appearing overly heavy or dull.
Shooting against a white background actually places very high demands on the model's own posture. Without the support of environmental elements, any tiny stiffness in the standing pose or hand movements will be magnified. Therefore, during the shoot, I kept paying attention to controlling my limbs' extension through core strength, attempting to give the frame a sufficient sense of still life without losing vitality through some small-scale hand movements and eye contact interactions.
Re-examining the final photos after they were generated, I feel that all the previous agonizing and repeated modifications during post-processing were completely worth it. The simpler the background, the more it highlights the details of the character styling itself. This pure white studio texture beautifully fits the temperament of this costume. Huge thanks for the high-standard execution of this collaboration. This set of works should be considered a very precious shooting record from recent times, and it has also given me a deeper practical understanding of studio lighting and post-processing in Cosplay photography.
